let's try this in a new format

Perhaps asking for comments was too high commitment - here's a new format for the survey. Please, vote away. The answer will determine how a particular bug in Pathauto2.x is fixed

Pathauto, but a significant number will be manual

mlncn's picture

Usually an edit of pathauto. It would be nice to keep track of which aliases a node has, perhaps even which are manual and which are automatic.

Declaring an arbitrary one primary, so that 501 redirect will do exactly what you want it to do, would be a huge bonus. As far as I know, no combination of Path Auto, Path Redirect, and Global Redirect does this.

Yep - that's exactly why I'm asking ;) The system is about to start keeping track of the aliases that it made and in order for it to work we need to make assumptions about the aliases already in the system. The results of this poll will be used to determine which way that assumption should go.

I'm not sure about the redirect idea (301, not 501, right?). You can currently get Pathauto to do an update action of: "create new alias, redirect old alias to new one." Other than that, I'm not sure how much more automatic it can be made that you get 301 redirects from one alias to another. If you could describe in more detail what the workflow is and how you'd like it to behave we may be able to find a solution for you.

There was a core patch by

catch's picture

There was a core patch by chx which Gupartap Singh took up (but which never made it in to D6) to define primary aliases for nodes, so whether pathauto or manual or whatever you had a unique url alias - this also covered the functionality currently provided by the global redirect module.

There was also some talk about 1-1 mapping of aliases to core drupal objects (nodes/users/taxonomy terms) with the current alias table then only for extra/duplicate/custom aliases. I dont' think that got very far though.

Mostly manual

akahn's picture

Most of my site consists of static pages with manual aliases. These pages are edited fairly regularly. Pathauto is used for image nodes and news stories, the very simple mysite.com/name isn't necessary/feasible.

Thanks! I look forward to this bugfix!

thanks!!
