Hey everyone,

I'm casting the net out to see if there are any drupal developers in the area that are looking to help out some local organization groups with their websites. There are currently a few that I am aware of. I personally don't have the time to build all these sites and it would be nice to help some of them get off the ground as most of you know how the learning curve for drupal is. These would be gasp unpaid gasp jobs, but they are meant to support your local community. We are currently in the process of helping grow the area's local "geek" network through a new local non-profit that has been setup called a2geeks if you are unaware (http://a2geeks.org). This is just one of the sites that I know of that needs to be moved to drupal but there are other groups that need help as well. I know the whole idea of free help may sound terrible but I think it opens up the door for many other points of contact within the local community. Anyway if you are interested just feel free to hit me up here via contact form or just respond below.

-Anthony

web dev in Detroit

bc's picture

I'm a Drupal developer in downtown Detroit. Mostly, I work with the Allied Media Projects on two drupal sites: alliedmedia.org and talk.alliedmedia.org.

How are you organizing developers to work together on free projects? Is there a manager for each organization's project, or is it one-on-one?

I'm definitely interested in helping, and moreover I'm interested in meeting any Detroit developers doing innovative projects.

Drupal in Detroit / Non-profit groups

alexfisher's picture

I feel your guys' pain-- I've had quite a few non-profits working to fill-in my spare time with free websites, too. I'd be interested to brainstorm with you guys on creating some sort of collaborative effort to help non-profits out.

On a side note (re: Ben's interest in meeting Detroit developers), MDDUG and the Michigan Drupal Meetup group are combining group meetings this month and we're looking to have a really good turn-out of Drupal enthusiasts in the area. Come check us out and consider joining the meeting:

On the subject of nonprofits...

bshensky's picture

Here's an interesting take on a nonprofit project I'm working on with an unusual angle.

I have taken on the role of "webmaster" for my Cub Scout son's Pack. I was told that the Pack recently agreed to use a packaged Software as a Service (SaaS) called MyPack. My directive was to learn to use MyPack and share my experiences with the Pack so that there's continuity within the group when my son moves on and out.

I quickly learned that MyPack was built using Drupal. AFAICT, it looks like Drupal 4.7 that had been upgraded to v5 and sprinkled with a variety of of-the-shelf packages and some custom ones as well.

I asked the folks at MyPack about allowing me to perform some customizations that would fulfill specific requests of our Pack, like forcing email addresses for usernames, or extending the Drupal calendar so it could be read with iCal or Google Calendar. The MyPack principals seemed pretty adamant about retaining control of their property, and did not allow us to execute any customizations.

Because of this, our Pack is seriously considering having me execute a ground-up custom Drupal 6 build with more modern packages.

The lesson I want to share here is that it really does pay to share the braintrust, and the workload, especially when it comes to nonprofits.

Hope to press the flesh with you all soon...

I should mention these are located in Ann Arbor.

The current ones I am aware of that need help are:
Appropriate Technology Collaborative
Full blown 401(c3) non-profit that needs a complete redesign
http://apptechdesign.org

YAAARC (Yspi-Ann Arbor Area Robotics Club)
Local group, no corporate status, just lost the domain and currently owner of domain won't hand it over so group might be changing name soon.

All Hands Active
A new hacker/makerspace in ann arbor that is working on becoming a non-profit.
I setup the current website and is running drupal, just a lot of the time they want a few enhancements or some graphic design goodness (Which I lack), so this doesn't site doesn't need much work just someone to help run the stuff.

I'm sure there are more but this is what I can think of off the top of my head for now. Feel free to contact anyone of those groups if you are interested.
