Alex Payne wrote an interesting blog post about how he stays healthy and sane at his startup and YCombinator News is tracking it as one of the most discussed threads right now.
One of the things Alex says is:
Later this month I’m moving away from my current neighborhood and, by extension, my current gym. I’m considering ditching a traditional gym for frequent CrossFit classes, and perhaps a return to Krav Maga, which I studied briefly years ago and enjoyed. The more I’ve gotten into an exercise routine, the more it starts to feel, well, routine. Both CrossFit and a martial art have the promise of adding appealing variety, and of avoiding the dreaded "fitness plateau" (which I’m currently in no danger of reaching).
I don't know what he means by "the dreaded fitness plateau" but the part about his gym and his current neighborhood really hit home for me. One of the main reasons I live where I do is to be closer to Santa Monica's outdoor gym (the location of the original muscle beach just south of the Santa Monica Pier). For me, being close to my preferred gym and outdoor activities (like the traveling rings) has been an integral part in staying active and healthy.
