What about BarCamp Orlando

joemoraca's picture

So the very week before this is Bar Camp -- I have never been -- but it sort of seems like a lot of people coming -- could we consider having the Drupal meeting at BarCamp?

I think the stated problem

liberatr's picture

I think the stated problem with that was one of the key presenters at this Drupal training session can't make it on the 5th or 6th.

I think Jackezel will back me up on this - we spoke about this very subject earlier in the week when I was asked to reserve the room.

Since Ultimike is the key presenter at this training session, I set the date based on his availability. Unless Ultimike can make it on the 5th, I suggest we leave the date as is. If he is available on the 5th, then I have no problem with changing the date. Also, are we talking about about integrating the Drupal Meetup/Training with the BarCamp or having it seperate, but on the same date and general location?

I say the 5th because I think we'll get a lot more Drupalers on a Saturday vs. a Sunday.

EDITED:

I have sent an email to Ultimike to let him know about this string and see if he can do the training on the 5th.

There's going to be plenty

There's going to be plenty of space at BarCamp to do a Drupal "Birds of a Feather" session if you just get your name on the board. The Wall Street Plaza is 8 venues all connected together, we have 2 of them reserved, and a third will be used as the "hallway".

Also, the Library (which we have reserved for the following weekend) is across the street form the BarCamp location if you're really dying to do it in another venue on the same day.

BarCamp rocks

ultimike's picture

I totally agree that it should be moved to April 5th - BarCamp is a great event and should not be missed. But, I have to miss it. I have a previous commitment that I cannot change that weekend. Believe me, if I could be there, I would.

Maybe a solution would be to have the Drupal meetup at BarCamp, but then schedule another Drupal meetup for May. This might serve the extra purpose of retaining any momentum that Barcamp might generate for Drupal.

It was just sugestion - not knowing the details

I signed up for BarCamp and really would like to attend both days for that event.

I will go with the majority for the date for a separate drupal meetup... especially if I can share a ride

I suggest that we keep the All Florida Drupal Meetup on Saturday, the 12th.

I think the BarCamp is a great opportunity to spread the word, but would actually interfere with our more advanced Drupal training.

My reasoning:

  1. If we do the Drupal meetup at the BarCamp, the instructor time for the BarCamp is supposed to be limited to 20 minutes with 5 minutes of questions. Perfect for an "Intro to Drupal" class, but not enough time to get really in-depth for a Theming, Views/CCK, or Module Development class.
  2. If we do a separate training on the 5th, close to the BarCamp, anyone who wants to go to BarCamp and see all the different presentations would miss out during the time they were at the Drupal meetup.
  3. We already have a volunteer instructor for the 12th. If we change the date, we will have to find a new instructor who is expert in another aspect of Drupal, and who is willing to volunteer for the 5th.

If someone makes it to BarCamp and gives a little class there, like "Intro to Drupal", and then tells the attendees that we are going to have a more advanced Drupal training session on the following weekend, that would drive interest and boost our attendance on the 12th.

Palm Room

BTW the room name is the Palm Room - we have it from 1PM to 5PM. There are lots of cool places to eat in walking distance.

Just wanted to send out a reminder to everyone that the Florida Drupal Group Meeting & Training in Orlando is on Saturday, 12 April, from 1:00 - 5:00 p.m.

"Ultimike" will conduct training on Module Development, and there will be time for introductions, as well as questions, answers, and discussions on Drupal.

The Library has a policy that no food or drink can be served in the premises, but you can bring in food and drink for yourself. The plan is to have a cooler(s) in my truck where we can get drinks/snacks during breaks.

Please indicate that you will be attending or reply to this string, so we'll know how many people we need to prepare for.

I might be a few minutes

I might be a few minutes late but I'll be there.

OK I just confirmed I will be there
