Has Install Profile API been deprecated?

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

I see the latest release of Install Profile API is from 2009, the issue queue is frozen for months...
Is the module deprecated? If it is, indeed, has it been deprecated in favor of something else?

install_profile_api = profiler + features

Since features can be upgraded its a far nicer way of doing things. With the main purpose of Profile to just list the modules/features to enable on installation.
