agenda discussion for the next user group meeting?

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

how about a discussion of what we would like to get out of the next meeting? i suggest that we each list a couple of areas of druapl we would like to find out more about and a couple of areas where we can share our know-how with the other participants? we could then vote and pick the three topics that we are most interested in learning more about.

my choices for things i want to learn more about:
- theming
- uploading multiple images at a time for end users (not with ftp)
- wysiwig editors with support for embedding images and video that are easy to use for end users
- patching drupal core (e.g. from 5.5 to 5.7) without wiping out the existing directory structure

things that i can to share / contribute:
- internationalisation: how to set up a web site in two or more languages
- how to quickly and easily keep your drupal site(s) updated with drush
- how to easily embed flash video in your blog or other postings
- an overview of useful contributed modules

look forward to everybody's feedback and see you at the next drupal user group meeting

This looks like a good idea

This looks like a good idea to me. Things I'm interested in:

  • Using the Asset Modul (or something similar) well. There might be other modules that do the same things (I'm not too happy about the way the modules does things). This might go into the same direction as pban02 with the wysiwig editor.

What I can share:
- Translating UI
- Introduction to Modul creation (my two modules: http://drupal.org/project/comment_og and http://drupal.org/project/outline_dmenu)

I always like to learn about theming, but I think it's a pretty wide area. Maybe we should be more specific here.

Some more input

After our last (my first) meeting i tested a lot of things. Some topics of mine follow.

Debugging:
E.g. there was some discussion about debugging drupal using Zend Studio. I installed the free opposite Eclipse, PDT (Php Development tools), and XDebug which seems to be a perfect combination for debugging. Configuration is pretty straightforward (although it takes some time...).

D6 ImageCache:
I'm not sure about your knowledge about ImageCache. This is some tool to resize and crop images to a given size for presentation. We like the idea of uploading original size images and letting ImageCache do the resizing by itself. Integration in themes is very simple.

Wysiwyg:
I introduced FCKEditor after some testing and after Problems with Tinymce and further. FCKEditor is pretty lightweight and does most issues i know from other WYSISYG editors correct. The configurability also allows to do exactly what needed. Most important the "Exclude" filter to tell in where it should not show up by IDs.

Let me know when i need to prepare something of the given topics.

I like to hear stories about Internationalization, especialy D6 related.

Agree

having a topics list is a good idea.

I could talk about or participate in discussions on a few topics:
- ubercart
- theming basics
- multisite installation
- google analytics and adwords
- basic module development for my own bus site (including jquery)

all of these topics i have worked on in the past to get my site where it is. it's all self tought, but a possible starting point.

i have also started the experiment of building a new site in D6 and describing the process (http://www.bloghouse.org/de/blog/cgalli) to start a 'online user exchange'. so far no comments but some number of readers. maybe you want to bring in you know-how there as well.

Swiss Agenda

I'm interested in how to get Swiss businesses, NGOs, and UN switched on to Drupal, so that people like us can choose the best clients, and spend less time selling ourselves. What about advertising free public or private Drupal introduction sessions? Switzerland is slow to take up Drupal.

All the meetings these days are unconferences - with no agenda at all. You come with something to speak about.

Suggestions for topics have all been technical so far - yet Drupal has a culture of solving technical problems online. Maybe we should start up an IRC group for that.

DrupalCamp CH?

floretan's picture

I agree with the fact that most user group meetings are technical and appeal only to people already working with Drupal. I haven't participated in any of the swiss meetings (I'm working in San Diego, but I'll be back in Switzerland over the summer), but it seems that there's enough activity in Switzerland to have a small DrupalCamp.

If we have presentations that appeal to different people (developers, designers, members of organization that are looking into using Drupal, curious newbies, site administrators) we could easily get a good number of people interested. The Los Angeles Drupal user group had about as many people when they organized their first DrupalCamp last year, and over 150 people registered and showed up.

So, what is needed?

  • A few volunteers to get things started
  • A location to hold the event
  • A website (there's even an install profile just for that http://drupal.org/project/cod)
  • Sponsors (many companies are interested in Drupal and would be willing to cover various costs)

This is just the general steps, there's definitely more that needs to be done, but I really think an event like this could have a big impact and help promote the use of Drupal in Switzerland. If we start organizing something like that now, we should be able to make this happen around mid-August. Who's interested?

It seems like things are

rapsli's picture

It seems like things are finally starting to move. A Dupal Camp would be way cool. I would be willing to show some stuff. I though don't know exactly what to except as I've never attend any conference... Therefore wouldn't know if I have enough "expertise"...

As for organizing the whole thing. I don't have the capacities right now to do it. I would though be willing to help (as far as my ressources allow it).

Kind regards
Rapsli
