Drupal Gold Coast Meetups

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.
jaymiejones86's picture

Hi Everyone,

I know there are meetups in Brisbane, QLD, but was just wondering if there is anyone here from the Gold Coast?
If so, what are your thoughts on having a Gold Coast based meetups?

Comments

Suggestion: Try meetup.com

svenryen's picture

Hi jaymie!

I've been running a Drupal meetup here in Singapore since June.
We've had some success announcing the meetups through meetup.com.

If that site is also popular in Australia, you may want to check it out
and use it to send out announcements for people to RSVP etc.

When we first started out, I had no idea there were so many Drupalheads
in Singapore. It seems that the community is really growing these days :)

Hey Svenryen, Thanks for

jaymiejones86's picture

Hey Svenryen,

Thanks for that, but was just seeing if there is anyone in QLD on here specifically from the Gold Coast. Then gonna see if there would be any point in setting up Meetups here on the Gold Coast, instead of driving about an hour to the Brisbane Meetups. Thanks again.

Gold coast

Jeth-Ro's picture

Hi jaymie,
I would be keen to get together to group on the gold coast. Im only a new user so i dont know whad id have to offer exactly. Ive done 3 sites so far.
I havent been to any in brisbane but would be keen to come up to the next one.
I would rather help start a group on gold coast, maybe there are people in tweed that could come up.
Have you had much exp with drupal?
Keen to hear from u.
Cheers

Hi Jeth, Well the Gold Coast

jaymiejones86's picture

Hi Jeth,

Well the Gold Coast Drupal Group would be for everyone, no matter what their experience, its basically just to get together and talk about everything Drupal from A - Z kind of thing. The only thing is Brisbane being fairly close to most of the Gold Coast, but I would still like to see if there would be enough people to do one on the Gold Coast or Far North Coast New South Wales.

I actually live in Tweed Heads myself but don't know of anyone who does Drupal work around there.

I work full time doing Drupal websites so I have a bit of insight into Drupal you could say. I think I would have a lot to offer to a new Drupal Group.

Do you know anyone else who uses Drupal that may be interested?

And I am too going to the next Drupal Brisbane meetup, whenever that is, hopefully one more before Christmas, so might see you there.

Gold coast group

Jeth-Ro's picture

Hi Jaymie

That's good for me! I'm teaching my self with the help of downloaded books and lynda.com training videos on html & xhtml, css, php and of course drupal.

I know of another guy on the gold coast who works with drupal so i've sent him a message through his website. Hopefully he's keen to get together. How many would we need to get a group started up? How many people go to Brisbane? How do I find out when the next Brisbane one is on? Mate, I dunno if I would go by my self seeing as though i really know bugger all compared with someone like you.

I'd like to be working full time with drupal too. I would like to be able to design the websites, then convert them to theme so i could service the client from start to finish and customise their site for them. At the moment i'm using themes from www.templatemonster.com which i've found are pretty easy to implement and make simple changes with the css.

I haven't even spoken to someone else who works with drupal so I'd be keen to get to brissy or at least find enough people on the gold coast who are interested in starting a group here. What normally happens in the Brissy group meets? I can imagine a whole bunch of dorks bring their laptops and showing each other code! only kidding.. I'll have to find out when the next one is so I can check it out.

Cya,
Jeth

Good to see your teaching

jaymiejones86's picture

Good to see your teaching yourself. Thats the best way to do it IMHO.

In regards to how many we would need in a group, I don't think there are any set rules, so it really could be one person, as lame as that sounds haha. I am not sure how many people attend the Brisbane meetups, I am yet to go to one but will be at the next one most likely. The Brisbane meetups are usually posted on here when they will be (in the Australia Drupal Group), so keep a lookout there.
I don't think it matters how much you know, its just about meeting other Drupalers/Drupalists/Drupals, whatever you want to call them, and talk Drupal. Skill level is irrelevant really, and anything that you don't know, I am sure people will be willing to show you how.

In regards to working full time on Drupal websites, ease your way into it if your doing freelance, and make sure you give yourself plenty of time to complete the project. If you think it will take 4 weeks, tell the client it will take 6 weeks. Always good to have some fallback and if you do get it done early, present it early, the client will be impressed because you got it done well before it was due. Just a little tip.

Well you have spoken to someone now who works with Drupal full time so if you do need any help just PM me on here. I would be quite keen to get a group going on the Gold Coast / Southern Gold Coast as its less time to drive to Brisbane for me, so see if you can wrangle some more people together and maybe we can do a meetup soon.

Guys i know have moved to US

Jeth-Ro's picture

Hey Jaymie,
I've spoken to Tyler and unfortunately he and another guy, Matt Lechleider, have both moved back to Canada and Chicago respectively. Bugger!

I've checked and was considering getting the domain drupalgoldcoast.net or drupalsoutheastqld.net (or similar, anything that you think might be suitable) and build a simple site that would hopefully gain some interest with any locals. I was wondering if you had some server space to host the site?
I can use a sub domain/ or install the site to a folder of my current site (which is not live atm) but would rather not make it about me, and make it open for anyone who has interest on the coast so I'd prefer it's on it's own. If not, then i will need to purchase some hosting and get it up and running. I normally use Net Registry but they areb about $22/month. What do you think? If you can't help, can you recommend anyone who is a bit cheaper?

Tyler said he and Matt went to the Brisbane meets and there was about 12 people there. So there is some presence in Brissy, just hope we can get the same down here. Perhaps i can get a drupal logo on my car and paint it blue?? loL!

Finally fished the html/xhtml video tutorials...learnt some cool things. Now onto css, then php, then themeing :P

I actually work in Palm Beach, so it's not that far to Tweed from work. I live in Southport tho.

I am traveling back to the Gold Coast for Drupal Down Under in January. Staying with friends in Pacific Pines the week after DDU. Maybe we can have a meetup? More than happy to present or provide user group guidance to help kick it off.

As a sysadmin of many years, I have unlimited servers and hosting space. Would be more than happy to setup domain and free hosting.

Thanks Matthew, It would be

jaymiejones86's picture

Thanks Matthew,

It would be great to have a meetup. It could be our first?

It would be really appreciated if you have user group experience and help point us in the right direction.

Thanks for the offering of the servers and hosting space but I already have that sorted ;).

Hey Jeth, I already purchased

jaymiejones86's picture

Hey Jeth,

I already purchased a fair while ago the domains drupalgoldcoast.com and goldcoastdrupal.com. I can setup a site on one of my servers if you like. Will have to work out exactly what we want on the website first for visitors. I am just wondering if we should use something like Open Atrium instead which might be a much better solution.

Funny that, I live in Tweed Heads and work in Southport. Ha.

If we were to go ahead with the site whats peoples thoughts on drupalgoldcoast or goldcoastdrupal?

Domains = Good news

Jeth-Ro's picture

That's wicked news! I think drupalgoldcoast would be best.
I'm not familiar with OPen Atrium.. I just had a quick look but can't really comment. So it would be up to others to decide what is best.

Hey guys, looks like you

miniwebs2's picture

Hey guys, looks like you could do with some female company!

Live Windaroo and tend to travel a lot so miss lots of Brisbane meetings but yes, I'd be in for a Gold Coast get-together.

Have been working almost non-stop on Drupal over the last couple of years - love it but there is just so much to learn and always something new to find out.

I run my own small business this end of town from domain name purchasing, hosting, web design and ongoing maintenance - mainly for clients who need a website but have absolutely no idea what to do.
They are my target market as it gives me total control over the hosting aspect especially.

I also am going to http://drupaldownunder.org - must get my ticket!!!!

Catch up one day??

Regards
Brenda

Hi Brenda, We would like

jaymiejones86's picture

Hi Brenda,

We would like everyone to join the group. Im going to get the groups website up and running hopefully this weekend if I can find some time which will be Open Atrium based.

Sounds like you are kept busy with all that work, good to see that its working out for you. Alas I am stuck working 830 - 5, 5 days a week for the man so to speak haha, but do the same things you do, but we deal with more so small to large businesses around Australia and some overseas.

Definitely catch up one day, we are looking to have a meetup around DDU, so definitely catch up at DDU if you get your ticket otherwise at our first meetup!

Got my ticket! I'm in!

gold coast meetup while I am in town?

slurpee's picture

I would love to attend the first Gold Coast meetup, but will only be in town 1 week. What day works best for everyone the week after DDU: Monday Jan 24 - Thursday Jan 27?

Maybe I can present on Drupal user groups to provide guidance to help your new group grow? Almost 5 years ago I started the Chicago Drupal Meet Up Group and have never looked back. Since I have organized 3 camps, 70+ meetups, and attended many other user groups all around the world (including Australia). Our Chicago group started with 5 people in a bar drinking beer, but has grown to 650+ members, and is host city for Drupalcon in March. Hopefully I can share my knowledge to build the Drupal community at a global level.

late jan gold coast meet up

Jeth-Ro's picture

I'm keen to come on any night. So i'm available to come should we work out a time. I don't have much to offer at this stage because my knowledge of Drupal is very basic.
But I'm definitely keen to come. You can count me in.

What kind of place is good for something like this? a cafe or pub or something like that? Or someones house? Do you normally bring laptops or just talk about drupal?
I've lived here for 10 years so i'm sure I could find somewhere, just not sure where you would normally have a meetup.

Cheers,
Jeth

An opportunity we definitely

miniwebs2's picture

An opportunity we definitely need to take up Slurpee and will do some followup on local libraries about free venue rooms - otherwise who lives where and we can work on a central venue from there.
For all the GC folk, I'm in Windaroo, where are you all at?
Everyone brings laptops usually - often with own mobile broadband, someone can present something if planned in advance but ideally a topic of discussion is the way to go I would think.

Regards
Brenda

I'm from Tweed Heads but

jaymiejones86's picture

I'm from Tweed Heads but travel to Southport everday for work. Unfortunately no rooms to use at the office to use but I am sure we will be able to find somewhere.

In regards to an agenda, I think we should keep it open ended for the first few meetups and then maybe let what is happening in the Drupal community and with work that we have been doing recently dictate what will be discussed.

Anyone elses thoughts on this?

Staying in Pacific Pines

slurpee's picture

I am staying with friends in Pacific Pines and can ride the Airtrain closer to meetup. Maybe someone can give me a ride back to my friend's after meetup?

Does Tuesday January 25th work? 7:00 pm?

Time and dates

jaymiejones86's picture

25th of January at 7pm AEST sounds pretty great. Picking the venue will be a tricky one, Im fairly certain the Tallebudgera surf club is either really cheap or free to use their function room, I will see what I can dig up as another club I am with has done AGM's there before and its not too bad of a setup.

If anyone wants to see where - http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=tallebudgera...

Date and time okay for me -

miniwebs2's picture

Date and time okay for me - hate evening things - I'm a day-timer but I can cope!
Next we need a venue!
So I count 4 of us interested going by this thread - any more takers?
But meantime, have a great Christmas everyone!

Regards
Brenda

Plus One

I live in Beenleigh and have been to a Brisbane meetup but the Gold coast is just as far so I should be able to make it.

I will also be at DDU just haven't got my ticket yet...

Hey kaybee57 - Dunno if I'm on the 4, but i'm in. Just makin sure

Drupal-on, Wayne. Drupal-on, Garth.

Okay folks - just been

miniwebs2's picture

Okay folks - just been through all the above comments and suggest the following:
There are 6 of us reading and answering in this group:

jaymiejones86 (Tweed),
Jeth Ro (Southport),
slurpee (US but DDU attendee and willing to come to 1st GC meetup)
kaybee57 (me, Beenleigh)
lukebrooker (Beenleigh)
jehnich (Sydney, DDU attendee but willing to come to a GC meetup)

That really only means 4 after slurpee and Irene (jecnich) depart, but I'm sure we could up that!

So...
Date and time okay it seems by all for Tue Jan 25 at 7.00pm
Southport region would be midway between those of us here - Jeth, can you suss out a community centre in your area that we can possibly access at night?
(Or if anyone else has a venue recommendation??)
I checked libraries but they all close 6, 7 and 8pm so obviously no good.

OR.... we could plan a group meet at DDU and work from there?? Thoughts??

Slurpee...
Looks like you're good at setting up new Drupal meetups - can you perhaps put something together for us on what sort of things we could follow up on over the next few months? And how to keep an active group working well?

Okay, so I've rabbited on here but we're obviously keen to make this work so have taken the initiative in moving forward......

Let's all come together on the night with a couple of topics of interest that you might like discussed at a meeting - also be prepared to tell the est of us who we are, what we do and how we became involved with Drupal???

Sorry if I've jumped in here folks - but hey! Let's DO this!

Regards
Brenda

Great!

drupal_kid's picture

Hi all,

Just resumed the links etc with Drupal after a couple of rather interesting months...

I'll be at DDU - live in Main Beach so if we can car-share it would be great.

Also looking for some hints around freelance work in terms of finding it and pricing it!

Would love to share ideas for some business ventures as well - I presume there are some
likeminded people here?

I've enquired at a few places in southport that would be suitable for our meet up. Just waiting for a reply.

I could always ask my boss if we can have it at work in Palm Beach. Would that be ok? At least theres wi-fi there..

RE: Drupal Gold Coast Meetups

slurpee's picture

Getting excited for DDU and the first Gold Coast Meetup. I assume the meetup will start at about 7:00 pm, but let me know if anyone wants to meetup before to grab dinner? It is always fun hanging out with Drupal people from around the world.

Coast on hall hire

Jeth-Ro's picture

I've been hit back by two places in Southport for a hall hire.
They want to charge for both halls that I had in mind. These are southport community centers. :(
I'll keep looking...
I'm guessing that a neutral place would be best.... (ie: not at home or work).

Found a venue

Jeth-Ro's picture

So, I went to bingo last night at Helensvale lawn bowls club..$80 up! Woot! I thought it might be good for a venue. It's a medium sized place but I'm sure we could grab a table, and dinner, and have it there. It's pretty quiet. Obviously no internet but do we need it? If not, I rekon the bowls club would be great. It's in Discovery Drv, Helensvale. Your thoughts?

This location is perfect. According to google maps, it is only 5 km away from where I am staying in Pacific Pines. I have walked to the Westfield Mall in the past, but I don't imagine it being too much fun with a laptop backpack. Anyone care to pick me up? If so, message me and I can provide address.

Feel free to create a calendar event in this group

Anyone has permission to do so and I think it's handy to have the meetup listed in the side block where it's visible to visitors of the Australia group.

Hope to travel down for a future Goldcoast meetup and say hi.

I hope everyone had a great time at DDU. Unfortunately I couldn't make it. I'm sure Slurpee can just go over it all again within out 2 hours tonight, right? lol
So, I should just look for a table of geeks when I get there tonight? I've got your number Irene, so if I'll try and keep an eye out for someone.

How was the meetup?

fenstrat's picture

I've only just noticed this thread. How did the meetup go on the 25th?

I'm currently working from South America but call the Northern NSW home (Kingscliff). Will certainly keep an eye on the Gold Coast group and look forward to joining in when I'm back there later in the year.

Cheers, Saul

Hi Saul, Yea you will

jaymiejones86's picture

Hi Saul,

Yea you will definitely have to join up when you get back. The group was 9 strong for our first meetup on Tuesday night which I thought was quite successful. We already have another meetup planned which you can find at http://groups.drupal.org/node/121789 which will be an introduction night to Drupal which we are planning to have every other month and if things go to plan, meetups once a month.

I am from Tweed Heads so not far from Kingy, if we hold the meetups anywhere up the coast like we did with the first one we could share a car if you like.

Huge thanks to Matthew (Slurpee) for providing us with tons of great advice and we really hope to see you back in Aus for DDU2011!

I hope everyone enjoyed the night and I hope to see the same faces as well as some new faces at the next meetup in February!

I will be updating the http://www.drupalgoldcoast.com website soon and also adding a twitter account also. Stay tuned on the website and join up to receive notifications about events.
