SEO: Proper way of deleting pages

Hello,

I plan on redoing my site and would like to know the proper way of deleting pages in terms of seo. I have ~100 product nodes, taxonomy, views, and panel pages I will be deleting in the process. From what I can gather, I would need to implement a 301 redirect using Path Redirect for each of the pages before removing them. Since the pages will no longer be related to the new version of the site, does it matter where I redirect the pages to if they have no PR or inbound links? I was thinking of redirecting them to the home page. Will this have an effect on my home page (~100 page redirects to /), which has a PR of 2? Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you,
Paul

Improve the load of 404 pages, page not found

When a 404 page is launched by Drupal, it needs to load all Drupal's stack.

In web sites with a lot of modules, like is my case, it means that php need load 60M ram for launch a page not found!

That is a problem if for example you have some kind of software testing your site with random urls like mcaffe.

So we made a little hack for index.php so we check previously if a page exists before load all drupal stack.

Here is the code. Someone knows a clean way for fix this problem?

/**
* @file
* The PHP page that serves all page requests on a Drupal installation.

Files Existing on Server Produce 404 Error -- IIS 6 Migrated from Linux

I have a Drupal 6 install on IIS 6 (Windows 2003) that was recently migrated from Linux. We implemented with FastCGI so we could use CleanURLs. Just about everything is working with one exception. I have a content type that uses filefield field in the CCK. For some reason, I get a 404 error when trying to click on the links for these files.

aggregated css/js 404 prevention module

Problem: If the aggregated css/js file doesn't exist then drupal is loaded, looking for it; a 404 for the file is usually the result.
Solution: Have a lookup table pairing the old file to the new one, returning the new aggregated file in the process.

Create 2 menu hooks
file_directory_path() . '/css/%'
file_directory_path() . '/js/%'

Panels and 404

I'm using Panels 2 on a site that I'm working on right now, and I've discovered that paths to non-existent pages that begin with the URL of the panel page do not produce a 404.

For example, let's say that this is a page that doesn't exist:

[1] http://example.com/melvin

If I go to that page, I get a 404 Page Not Found response code, and a 404 page is displayed.

Let's say I have a panel page with this URL:

[2] http://example.com/panel1

Now let's say I try to browse to this URL:

[3] http://example.com/panel1/melvin

Still having 404 issues with Drupal

Hi,

I am using Drupal 5.2, Cleanurls, Pathauto and Global Redirect enabled.
Drupal is throwing correct 404 in most cases, BUT
Drupal doesnt throw 404 for all urls with the following pattern:
http://example.com/myContentType/doesnotexist

You can see this Issue live:
http://drupal.org/forum/doesnotexist

Maybe this could be exploited by someone and hurt your SE rankings.
Has anyone a workaround for this? Or don't you see this as an issue?
