Use of the Drupal Trademark and Drupal Association

Today I received a very polite email via my Drupal.org contact page from a member of the Drupal Association requesting that I remove the Drupal Association from the list of clients on my company website, as they have no record of doing business with us. That is correct - we were hoping to build the Drupal TV website, but that didn't happen.

The strange part was that I was also asked not to use the phrase "Drupal Support" on our website, but instead use something like "Company X support for Drupal". The D.A. member acknowledged that I mentioned that Drupal is a trademark registered to Dries Buytaert, but apparently that isn't enough.

Trademarked projects on drupal.org

I was wondering if there is any reason for trademarked projects (themes, modules, distros) possibly being excluded from drupal.org. It is a given that anything distributed on drupal.org must be GPL2+ but I am wondering if it can be trademarked.

I have had a look around the various policy documents and see nothing relating to trademarked projects. Most materials discuss the GPL or the Drupal trademark itself. Are there any others?

New draft of the Drupal Trademark Policy

It took several iterations and various lawyers but here is another draft of what will become the Drupal Trademark Policy. We did our best to incorporate many of the suggestions that were provided in response to the previous draft. As a result, this is a substantial update and I encourage you to read it carefully.
