Welcome to VANDUG!
The Vancouver Drupal Users Group (VanDUG) is the local meeting place for Greater Vancouver people interested in Drupal. We were formerly known as the Vancouver League of Drupalers, but that's a long story.
The group mostly hangs out on Slack at https://vandug.slack.com/. We also post our meetings on Meetup.com at https://www.meetup.com/Vancouver-Drupal-Users-Group. All are welcome, it's listed as a private group to keep out the griefers.
We've been holding semi-regular virtual meetings during COVID-19.

Taxonomy child block
I'm trying to make a block that lists immediate taxonomy children when someone visits taxonomy/term/1 For example:
*
*
*
*
Colours
-Blue
--Navy
--Sky
--Baby
-Red
If term 1 was Colours, the output would be
Blue
Red
If term 1 was Blue, the output would be
Navy
Sky
Baby
with each term linking to the taxonomy page appropriately.
This seemed a pretty easy project, but in Views 3 the taxonomy View type is missing. Any help would be appreciated.
render block in d7
I'm trying to place the contents of a block in a custom jQuery list. To start out I'd like to just try rendering the contents of a block into a page or block, but am having difficulties. Any help would be appreciated. Here's the php code I'm using:
<?php
$block = module_invoke('webform', 'block_view', 'client-block-103');
print render($block);
?>From instructions here:

Update: This does not work for regular blocks either:
<?php
$block = module_invoke('block', 'block_view', '16');

Andrew Mellenger of Grey Vancouver will be sharing about their newly launched website, MindCheck.ca. Be sure to come and join the group!
We meet at the ABC Restaurant at 15373 Fraser Hwy, Surrey, BC. See our meetup page, http://www.meetup.com/surrey-drupal for more info and please RSVP.
Drupal Q&A: Bring your questions on anything related to Drupal from how to do something technical in PHP to what modules are needed to implement a feature you need.
Cost: While there is no cost for this event, it would be great if you can come prepared to order something (some of us order dinner, some just drinks) along with a 15% gratuity as we really want to keep up a good relationship with ABC as they've been great in allowing us to book their conference room.

Drupal is a fantastic web development framework that allows you to build pretty much any kind of website you can think of. It has a highly flexible theming system and a simple and very well supported modular extension system. However, there are some things that Drupal isn't really that good at. Two things in particular are large Document Repositories and dealing with Hierarchical Data Stores. Enter Alfresco. Alfresco is the most popular open source Document Repository and overall ECM on the market today. Alfresco's strengths are Drupal's weaknesses and for most part ditto the other way.
