*** UPDATE: Added Venue ***

Well, enough people seem to be looking for Drupal work, I figured I should announce our next monthly meetup. We had a lot of new people at CeBIT that were interested, so I hope this will be a big one.

Same Venue as last time, only upstairs to avoid the smoke.

Date: June 19th
Time: 7pm - 9pm
Location:
Royal Exhibition Hotel (** Upstairs **)
86 Chalmers St, Surry Hills, NSW 2010, Australia
(02) 9698 2607
Link: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=royal+exhibition+hotel+...

If you login and subscribe to the event, I'll make sure to email out reminders since the system doesn't seem to be doing it on its own.

Any news on location...?

Is there any news on a location for the June meeting?

Not Yet

Not yet. We can always fall back to the same place as last month, but some people didn't like it so I'm looking for an alternative. Possibly the Gaelic Club or something else close to central station (that seems convenient for everyone).

If anyone has suggestions or can offer some space, let me know.

I can possibly still get the NSW Sports Club but the Royal Exhibition is okay, as long as we meet on the rooftop.

Projector? Space?

rcross's picture
rcross - Tue, 2008-06-03 01:17

I enjoy the ability to grab a drink at the pub, but I think it would be highly useful to have access to a data projector so that we could put up some presentation or demonstration material at the meetings. The only thing holding me back from using the Gaelic club is the lack of data projector - does someone have one or access to one that we could use?

NSW Sports Club suffers from the same lack of resources.

I am going to the PHP User Group meeting Thursday night. Maybe we can get Borland interested in hosting us as well. They are close to Wynyard Station.

Possible Venue

rcross - Mon, 2008-06-16 08:54

It looks like we might be able to use the CodeGear offices this week for our meeting. I'm waiting for confirmation and will hopefully be able to post all the details tomorrow. Otherwise, I'll post up the details of an alternate meeting place.

Sounds good. I have been to the PHP meetings there but missed this last one. It's a good spot but brings some logistical problems in getting into the building after 6:30 PM or so. You need to publish the phone number of someone inside who can let people in after the lifts doors shut and lift security sets in.

In CBD

rcross's picture
rcross - Tue, 2008-06-17 00:53

For the new guys, we will definitely be meeting in the CBD area. Usually close to central station, and if we secure this other venue then it is close to Town Hall. I hope to be able to confirm the venue by the end of the day. Also, if you signup for the event I'll send out an email reminder with all the final details the day before the meeting.

Fallback

rcross's picture
rcross - Tue, 2008-06-17 04:57

Well, unfortunately, the venue I was hoping to use has gotten back to me and said they can't. So, we need decide on a fallback. Below are some options, please let me know preferences or if you know of something else we can use - keep in mind we will have a larger group than usual I think.

1) Pub - Exhibition Hotel next to central - this was our location last time. It can be a bit noisy/busy and smokey, but has food/beer and we might be able to gather some tables in the upstairs. No presentation facilities.

2) Pub - Gaelic Club - we can ask for our own room, and there is a bar. No food unless you bring take away (which is ok) and no presentation facilities unless someone has a data projector to bring.

3) Coffee Shop - Gloria Jean's on Harris supposedly has free wifi and might be more cosy. No presentation facilities and will have to work out the large group thing. We need to confirm the wifi and could find an alternative coffee shop if anyone knows of a good one.

4) Library - NSW State Library near martin pl station - supposedly has free wifi and could probably find a room or something for the meeting. Closes at 8 though which would force us to move to a pub or something to continue chatting afterwards. Not sure about room or presentation facilities.

Least amount of effort on my part is option 1, but it would be good to have a good meeting this month since I'd like to discuss the wrap up of CeBIT, the drupal day last month, and discuss the idea of an Australian Drupal Association. It would also be helpful is someone else wants to chip in making a few calls or otherwise organizing bits.

No smoke

Would love to meet up, but only if we can escape smoke. Any chance that will be possible at at the Exhibition by using upstairs?

  • petition your state gov to introduce smoking bans in all venues including pubs :-).

..except crown casino ... now how does that work? >-(

OK, Option 1 it is

rcross's picture
rcross - Wed, 2008-06-18 08:16

Ok, Option 1 it is. We'll meet at the hotel at 7pm and we will aim for the upstairs. I don't have much time tonight, so if someone would like to call them and try to reserve a spot for upstairs, that would be really great. I would ask for space for 20 people, ideally the whole upstairs if possible. Please post here if you call and I will check this space tomorrow otherwise I'll try to call when I get a chance tomorrow.

Hi Ryan,

As a new user i was hoping to bring a few "how do you do this" type questions...but if they can be answered without sitting in front of a computer then venue 1 sounds fine.

Sydney Drupal Meeting

Russell Griffiths

Hi all. I'm intending to be a regular at these meetings,
but I retire on Friday and can't fool around at all this week,
so will sadly miss this first one.

But I agree with Nigel on the smoke free requirement .. nothing turns me off faster.

Glad to help with the 'find a host or regular meeting place' task ..
I've got lots of contacts around RailCorp and SydneyWater,
where after hours meeting rooms abound .. most with OHP and internet connections,
but no food or booze.

But the UTS at Central has everything .. as would Powerhouse Museum (I'm a member there).
Both are charged with the role of 'assisting with educational programs'

Royal Exhibition Confirmed

ozyank@drupal.org's picture
ozyank@drupal.org - Wed, 2008-06-18 10:56

My experience is that the upstairs cocktail lounge at the RE is pretty smoke free. The barman, Chris, has reserved the whole back area for us and if there are smokers in our crowd, they can be accommodated by walking to another corner.

I like Russel's suggestions at RailCorp or Sydney Water. They are both great locations but it is too late to try to arrange something there.

So, see you all tomorrow night at the Royal Exhibition Hotel on Chalmers Street. Scroll up for the map.

Walk all the way up the stairs to the cocktail lounge.

Questions from a new user

stevelyne's picture
stevelyne - Thu, 2008-06-19 01:30

Hi all,

Ryan suggested that newbies post some of the questions that might be answerable at tomorrow night's meeting. Here are some of mine, hopefully they'll be quickly and easily dealt with by experienced people...I don't want to hog the time.

Using menus
Purpose of some of the blocks
Images
• Random Image
• Attached Image
Where to use a story, a book, or a page
How to use “Adding new content types”
File management
Clearing a block from header that doesn't want to leave!

Thanks, see you tomorrow

I've got an immediate need to learn something about CCK

I want to create a custom form and also a node with tabular data that can be updated easily.

Wrap Up

rcross's picture
rcross - Fri, 2008-06-20 06:37

We had a pretty strong turn out last night. A lot of new faces and few regulars. It was really fun to chat with everyone and talk drupal over a beer. The upstairs area worked out pretty well since it was reserved. Thanks to Dennis and barman, Chris for that.

There was definitely a consensus that having presentation facilities would be really useful, even for just showing each others work instead of cramming around my little laptop screen.

Since it was mostly new people, I didn't really talk much about the wrapup of CeBit or last months drupal day at U. Syd. I also wanted to talk about creating an Australian drupal association, which would be able to help with some of these things I think.

Hope to see everyone one next month. Lets see what other venues/facilities we can organize by then.

Thanks
--Ryan
