group: Australia
rcross - Fri, 2008-06-20 06:44
Start:
2008-07-17 18:40 - 21:00 Australia/Sydney

**Updated Details ***
Same thing this month.

When: Thursday, July 17th
Time: 7pm - 9pm (Show up around 6:45!!)
Venue: ABC Centre 700 Harris Street, Ultimo Map

The ABC Centre has some security issues, so it is important that people arrive early so that James can sign everyone into the building. If you have problems you can call either of us.

Agenda:
This month James has volunteered to review/showcase the new scaffolding module (mainly aimed at developers)

It is possible that we may have to leave at 8:30, in which case we'll move to a nearby pub. Remember to bring your laptops to show each other what you're working on.

Post below if you can talk about something (anything is ok, everyone has something to share) or if you're are interested in other topics for discussion.

Remember to sign up, and I'll send out a reminder announcement a day before the meeting. This will also help us plan numbers/audience.

Hey quick question, does

LeBard - Fri, 2008-06-20 07:51

Hey quick question, does anyone know of problems with public caching in drupal and javascript? My javascript (Jquery) takes a reallly long time to load as a visitor but as a logged in user it works fine. Caching optimisation could be interesting topic. If anyone can point me in the right direction that would be great.

Venue

Sounds like we might have an alternate venue for this months meetup. I am still looking for anyone that can get access to a data projector. If we can't find someone with one, I've also done a bit of looking around and I think if we could get ~15 people who'd be willing to chipin ~$30 then I could probably buy a lowend one for us to use. Several people said they would be ok paying a little $ for a venue, but this might be an alternate option. What do people think?

@rhoward - still waiting to hear back from you.

WYD congestion in SYD?

Possibly a dumb question... but isn't 17/7 the big WYD thing in Sydney? I reckon it might be tricky getting into/out of the city by public transport (or any other form of transport) on that particular day.

Would it make sense to slip the meetup until 24th?

Good thought

Good pickup, but I doubt it will be that problematic. I'm actually coming from Randwick, so I'll probably have it the worst. If most people think it'll be a problem, then we'll postpone it but otherwise lets stick with the plan.

I'm away next week and had resigned to the thought of missing the meeting, but if we agree on the 24th, then I can and will be there.

Cheers,

Irene

There were no problems during the Olympics

No real problems during APAC

Not to worry!

I don't think there is going to be any problem getting to Central Station next Thursday. I could be wrong but the warnings about massive problems in transport that day are probably exaggerated, like they were during the Olympic Games and APAC.

I suggest we stick to our schedule of the 3rd Thursday of the month and move it at the last minute if on Tuesday and Wednesday there are big problems

projector issue

aimeemaree - Fri, 2008-07-11 02:33

Hi all :)

I am quite happy to donate to the Projector, i think it is a good idea as i saw at the last meeting it was really hard for people to see what was occurring and it was really a one on one or one on two discussion. Whilst this was great and i believe we all got a lot out of the meeting i feel a projector would just make the meetings information reach more ears.

Also about the Date either is fine for me, I belivie with the WYD as most of the events are happening at the Wynard end and Randwick ends of town we may escape the rush, But there is always the availability of trains and the squash to get home to contemplate?

Regards

We have a venue - it will be

gollyg - Tue, 2008-07-15 03:34

We have a venue - it will be at the ABC centre. The address is 700 Harris Street, Ultimo. Basically you get to central, walk toward Harris Street, turn right and walk down the street a few hundred metres.

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=700+harris+street,+ulti...

The room that we will be using is behind the security doors on level 7, so i will have to sign everyone in. This means that it is really important that people get there by 7pm and we go up as a group. I will come down one more time at 7.30 to check for people.

Walk in through the main foyer and find a seat on one of the couches near the big screens and settle in and watch some telly!

If there is an issue my mobile number is 0412 769 986.

See you there
James

Meetings for the rest of the year

ozyank@drupal.org's picture
ozyank@drupal.org - Tue, 2008-07-15 08:55

I keep repeating myself but I think it is very important to get a consistent date for the meeting. Several months ago, when I started the Sydney meetings I polled for certain dates and the group back then settle don the 3rd Thursday of the month. While not the best date for me, I accepted it. We have always had this problem of a venue and I thank James so much for organising the Ultimo venue which, even with the WYD, is so convenient for so many. I also don't believe it will be a problem Thursday night either. If the Pope is not busy that night, he might even find out that Drupal is useful and could come to visit. I know many of us think it is a miracle for what we do.

So, as I blather on, we, as a group, have to have several things going for us:

  • A consistent day of the month for a meeting;
  • a reliable meeting place and time;
  • wonderful people to do presentations.

(the last point is the most important.

Dennis

Please point out where I'm wrong, but we've been fairly consistent about the 3rd Thursday of the month for quite awhile now - probably getting close to a year now. This month is not any different, unless I'm using a different calendar.

We have also endeavored to keep a consistent venue, but its also important to be flexible to the groups needs and venue's generosity. I have always tried to ensure there is plenty of notice about what the venue will be, and I don't feel it has jumped around that drastically. As our group grows and evolves over time, things are bound to change though.

I always encourage people to make presentations at the meetings, and I think everyone agrees they are beneficial though it is not the only purpose of the meetups. This is also why it is important to have a suitable venue. Do you have something you wish to present Dennis? I don't think I have not seen any material from you yet, so if you feel strongly about this I encourage you to lead by example.

I always appreciate any feedback about the meetings, and I encourage any comments on this. If anyone feels they can provide something better, I welcome people to contribute and/or step up. James has contributed to 2 of these points this month (possibly all 3) but everyone doesn't have to aim that high ;-)

Its important to realize that we are all here to help each other, but no one is going to do anything for us. Your level of participation directly impacts what you will get out of the community.

No criticism intended

You are doing a great job. My comments were intended more as reminders of what will keep the group successful. The last meeting was a fairly good one, given the deficiencies of the venue. Once we get a better venue, projector, etc., then it will be a lot easier to do presentations to an audience.

WYD

didymo@drupal.org - Tue, 2008-07-15 06:51

I'll be avoiding Sydney during WYD. Sorry I can't make the meeting.

For people's information:

The Sydney Mechanics School of Arts Building will be closed on Thursday 17th July 2008 due to World Youth Day.

FUD

Most of the WYD scare is FUD. I have been in the CBD through Olympics and APAC and today for WYD. NO problems.
