rcross - Sat, 2008-07-19 04:19
Start:
2008-08-21 19:00 Australia/Sydney - 2008-08-21 21:00 Australia/SydneyLast month's meetup went very well, so we're aiming for a repeat this month.
When: Thursday, August 21st
Time: 7pm - 9pm (Show up around 6:45!!)
Venue: ABC Centre 700 Harris Street, Ultimo Map
The ABC Centre has some security issues, so it is important that people arrive early so that James can sign everyone into the building. If you have problems you can call either of us.
Agenda:
- Greetings and Welcome new people
- Presentation: Drupal 6 Changes by: Aimee Forsstrom
This presentation will discuss Aimee's experience with D6 on a recent project. It will cover changes to using/developing for D6 (architecture + theming) and the pros/cons necessary to decide if this is the right version for you to be using. - Presentation: Reputation API - measuring and rewarding user participation by: Jeremy Epstein
This presentation will give an overview of the new API and give a quick demo of the system. This will include: logging users' actions, building statistics by data mining the logs, writing the reputation algorithm, and calculating the scores for users and their content. - General help/Discussion + Drinks/food
Post below if you can talk about something (anything is ok, everyone has something to share) or if you're are interested in other topics for discussion.
Remember to sign up, and I'll send out a reminder announcement a day before the meeting with all the latest details. This will also help us plan numbers/audience.

Followup to FeedAPI question
Just to answer jeremy's (and my) question about why a feed is listed as a node.
If you are not using the node creation processor you need somewhere to store the data. This is the feed node.
It is only when you enable the node creation module this no longer makes much sense, as you end up with the content stored in two different node types.
See you all next meeting. I have booked the same room.
Cheers
James
Drupal Sydney August Meetup
Hi all,
Just confirming that i am working on the development of a Drupal 6.3 site at the moment as i am still a newbie to Drupal (but a well seasoned CMS developer) It will just be a quite informal talk and hopefully discussion about what i have found in Drupal 6.3 and some cool modules/APIs i have found which will hopefully get others talking about Drupal 6.3 and their new finds :)
Also wanted to say thanks for the room last meet-up it was brilliant, Woo Hoo we had a projector :)
Ryan, i will chat with you about my presentation closer to the date :)
Regards
Drupal 6 chat
Hi all,
hope my chat was of some help to some, I am really still in the midst of nutting out our architecture and also our theme, so whilst i could provide some information i am really still in the midst of getting my head around the Drupal way so to speak :) i mentioned to everyone about an IA paper i read on Lullabot which helped us, please find it located at http://www.lullabot.com/blog/drupalcon-information-architecture-architec... it was really quite impressive to see so many people when i first put my hand up to give the chat it was really still an informal group of about 8 or 10 and i was planning on spending three weeks sorting out my drupal site and not planning on spending three weeks correcting Java issues for another CMS system i work on, so i am sorry if the talk was not as informative as was needed for some people, but hopefully as there were a lot of new faces there was at least some new information :)
Also for those of us who are new to drupal :) Lullabot have released a DVD http://store.lullabot.com/products/understanding-drupal
As i said last night i love my video tutorials :)
Thanks Aimee
I have uploaded Aimee's presentation to slideshare. You can view it and download it here:
Drupal 6 Overview
I have also created a group on slide share so that we can upload all of them in one place. http://www.slideshare.net/group/sydney-drupal-users-group
@Jeremy - can you upload yours in the same way? or email it to me and I'll post it?

Any experience level is
Any experience level is welcome, and I am sure that you will find some interesting things to present. You have more experience than me in D6!
Next meetup the room will be in a slightly different configuration as they are using it the next morning, but should be fine (and the projector will be there).
I did ask about wireless but was put through to IT.
Views theming anyone?
I could talk about the views theming and customisation that I used on http://www.col.net.au/contractors with some general tips on views theming. It's a ver 5.x site but principles are similar to ver 6.
Is there any parking in that area? Is there a contact number to phone when I get lost?
Regards
Geoff
Sure
Hey Geoff,
I think that would be a useful presentation. Since we already have 2 presentations this month, can I sign you up for next months agenda?
As for parking, I am sure there is an ABC parking garage, but its probably for employees only. However, there are several other areas around there that should be available. Check the map link for more details about the area.
I'll also include a phone number in my reminder email when I send it out.
See you then!

Next month will be fine
That is good, takes the pressure off for my first time.

Geoff
Parking is possible at
Parking is possible at parking meters around thomas street and mary-anne street. But they take a 2 hour max i think. There are carparks behind the abc $15 (enter from thomas street, but on the chinatown side
map
my mobile is 0412 769 986, but try to get there by 6.50pm and there wont be any problem - meet at the couches in front of the big screens.
Agenda updated
I updated the agenda with more details about this month's presentations. Post if there are any other topics people want to cover.

How to put a webform in a block
Please can someone supply the code for displaying a webform with name and email in a block.(drupal 5.7 & webform webform-5.x-2.1.3.tar.gz.) or show some other way to make an opt-in box.
Thanks
Carol
Try SimpleNews
Hey Carol,
You might try the simplenews module, which would provide an opt-in mailing list for you with alot of other features too. I don't have much experience with webform, but we can try to solve the issue at the meetup if you want.

What is date for October Meetup
We will be in Sydney in October and was wondering if you had a date for the meet up that month?
Would love to fit in in with our travel plans.

3rd Thursday of the Month
We aim to meet on the 3rd thursday of every month, so it will likely be the 16th of October. However some rare times other things cause us to change it. Either way, if you're going to be in town and want to meetup with other Drupalers you can always just post a message in this group. I'm sure someone will be interested in meeting up even if there isn't a scheduled meetup.

Change to 2nd or 4th Thursday, please
I have attended a few Sydney Drupal Group meetings, but lately have been unable to since I have a another commitment every 3rd Thursday of the month that cannot be moved. I would still like to attend the Drupal meetings, so wonder whether we could change the meeting to the 2nd or 4th Thursday of a month?
Please discuss when you meet tonight!
Cheers,
Irene
I would be reluctant to
I would be reluctant to change the night for the meetups. Last week we had over 20 people - there probably isn't a night that will suit everyone and I feel that the consistency in timing has been part of the reason that they are growing. I have also booked the room on these nights for the rest of the year. I hope that you can find a way of attending the meetings, as the last few have been really good.
But in the end that is just my opinion, it is really up to the group.
Cheers
James
Need more support
Hey Irene,
I brought up the idea of an alternate date at the meeting briefly, but unfortunately there didn't seem to be much support for the idea. I wouldn't say there was a negative response, but simply there wasn't anyone who really wanted to move the idea and I think there was the general feeling that the current date worked so why change it. Of course, the people the at the meeting obviously were able to make that time so I think you'll have to drum up some more support here on the forums from other people who would prefer a different date before we can seriously consider it. Sorry. I do hope you can find a way to make the meetings.
We are also looking at organizing a DrupalCamp in October during a weekend (looking at the 18th now) so hopefully you can make that.

Drupal Books
Hi all,
at the Sydney Meet-up people mentioned where to get Drupal books in Sydney, I have found some copies at BookWare http://www.bookware.com.au/cgi-bin/searchp.pl?mv_search_spec=drupal they are in North Sydney in one of the arcades, they do not have many books but they have some :)
Thanks Aimee
Thanks for your presentation last night Aimee. It was very interesting hearing from an IA perspective and your impressions regarding D5 and D6. A presentation like that takes a significant amount of time to prepare so thanks for taking that time to share your experiences.
regards
Geoff
Pictures
I posted a few pictures onto flickr, and I also created a flickr group for us to use for collecting future pictures.
