Tokyo or Saitama Group

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.
Dokuro's picture

Hi I am new to this group and I wonder if there is any kind of meeting in Tokyo or Saitama?

If there isn't, if anyone is interested, I would love to start one up.

Hi Shaun, I'm not in Japan

cloneofsnake's picture

Hi Shaun,

I'm not in Japan yet, but I'll be moving to Tokyo for work in the next 2 ~ 3 months (if the company can get the visa thing done on time...) I'll definitely help organize group events when I get there!

Here at HKDUG, we've been really active since a bunch of us got together in the last BarCamp event. I hope I can help bridge our HK group with Japan's Drupalers!

Cheers,
Nick

Let's do it

@cloneofsnake

Yeah, it would be great to get something going, maybe once a month or something. Then go from there. Anyone else out here?

In Tokyo

Drupalace-1's picture

Hi all. I'm a Tokyoite, and would be happy to meet other Drupaloids in the city. Kids at home make scheduling tough, but I'm open to ideas.

i'm thinking of moving to japan. If i did, i'm sure in to meet other drupalers.
But first i have to find some place here in belgium to start learning japanese. :)

Do we have a group yet, or its it just two maybes..and two that live in Japan?

This is sad.

Rather sparse...

Drupalace-1's picture

Well, working with what we have so far: Where in Kanto are you, Dokuro? I'm in Setagaya-ku, on Tokyu Toyoko line.

Drupalace-1's picture

Dokuro, sorry for the slow reply. For a few days there, this site was refusing me entry. (Eventually had to reset password.)

We maybe should work out details by email, but on the chance other potential joiners can see this, I'll keep it here for now:

Shinjuku is probably a good compromise, equally accessible to both (if you're near JR Takasaki line). (I'll let you know if I have plans to be near Saitama any time; let me know if you pass through the Jiyugaoka region of Setagaya.) The Shinjuku west side has all those electronics shops, too, an added benefit for geeks. : ) What do you have in mind - coffee, izakaya, pub, etc.? If daytime is possible, even in the coming week, great; otherwise, I can try to set an evening in the near future. No particular date pops out as best. Do you have an ideal date or even day of week?

And if any other Tokyo-region Drupalers see this, chime in!

dokumori's picture

Hi everyone. I'm Mori, a London-based Drupaller. I'll be back in Japan for few weeks in April (I'm originally from Japan). I'll be in Kanto area between 3-6th of April. Would any of you be available around that time for a meet up?

It would be nice to be able to have access to the internet so maybe we can do the first half at some cafe with wifi, then go to izakaya afterwards.

If you want to find more people to come along, we can post about the drop-in at drupal.jp / j-box / mixi's Drupal community.

Hi Mori. Please keep us

Hi, we are Drupal users in Osaka.
I saw on your web site that you are going to have a meeting on 3rd or 4th of April.
Although I and my business partner are living in Osaka, we are going to have a business trip to Tokyo on 2nd of April. So, if your meeting is on 2nd, we can join and meet you guys.
If possible, could you make that meeting on 2nd, Thursday?
We really appreciate your consideration.

Thanks.

Japanese is my mother tongue so I can translate for you.
Since we'll be meeting in Japan, I wouldn't want Japanese speakers to shy away from participating for not being fluent in English (or vice versa).
Unfortunately I won't be in Tokyo until the 4th, but if you of course have an option to get together without me.
Personally I would like to schedule it for the afternoon / evening on the 4th. Any thoughts?

correction: i'll be in tokyo from the 3rd.

Unfortunately, it looks like a choice between meeting kyoko and partner on April 2, or Mori on April 3/4... Too bad the dates don't overlap!

Currently, I can probably arrange any of those days. Dokuro, how about you?

So, 5 pm, April 4, appears

Drupalace-1's picture

So, 5 pm, April 4, appears to work well for everyone.

Where, though? Per a previous message, I think the west side of Tokyo - maybe along JR Yamanote, between Shibuya and Ikebukuro - works well for a couple of us. But Kyoko, you need to be near Shinagawa. Shinagawa is very convenient for me, but might be far for members from Saitama.

Actually, anywhere is fine for me, even the east side (Akihabara, Shinbashi, Ginza etc.); Hibiya Line gets me there easily. So I'll let others suggest a convenient area.

What kind of place? Bar? Izakaya? And how about network access?

Re presentations: I haven't been to a Drupal meeting, and don't know what kind of presentations people do. Just showing off sites that they've made?

Network access would be key for that, and Tokyo doesn't have many places with free WiFi. Actually, I do know one, a Ginza Lion or New Tokyo or something like that, at Tamachi Station (next to Shinagawa). It can get a little noisy with customers, but especially at earlier hours like 5, is a decent place for work meetings. The WiFi always works well.

Any other ideas?

Count me in April 4

xbro's picture

I've been looking at Drupal for the past several days coming from a PHP, database and entrepreneur background and I`m almost certain that I'll be diving into it one way or another.

I'd be delighted to meet up with you guys. April 4th anywhere is fine for me.

There's a cool, delicious and very economic(if w/ reservation, if I remember correctly course was around 1500yen) restaurant called HARU at Uchisaiwai-cho. They also have some of the best sake that you won`t see around everywhere.

http://www.enjoytokyo.jp/OD003Detail.html?ODEKAKE_ID=1&SPOT_ID=g_g305000

The Wifi place I looked it up at freespot.com, found a Shinagawa hotel that supposedly has Wifi in it's lobby.
http://www.freespot.com/map/tenpo.php?n=488 (feel free to look up anywhere that seems convenient for you)

I live around Ikebukuro, so any of the places being suggested is fine. Even just a pub sounds good.
Please keep me updated.

Best regards,

Scott Fujikawa

I'm good then

Dokuro's picture

I will be good to go at that time. Anywhere any time should be ok. I have an E-mobile card, if anyone has the incite on how to tether it, we could connect through that.

If anyone has a topic they want to learn, then we could go over some things, or just meet and get to know each other is good too.

Shaun

How's this place to start

How's this place to start off. It's at Shinbashi close to Shinagawa. Seems perfect for a presentation or two or a chat over some coffee. It should have Wifi. Let`s get the meeting room if anyone wants to do a presentation.

Scott - thanks for suggesting some venues. Although Office Himiko looks good, I don't think this meetup will be a formal one so a meeting room may not be necessary. I also prefer to have some background noise to make it less intimidating especially since it won't be formal :p

I think the hotel in Shinagawa will work well for us. Shall we meet there at 5?

FYI I have an account with Yahoo! BB's mobile broadband thing, so any McDonald's, Doutor, Renoir and other places so if the hotel lounge turns out to be unavailable / rubbish, we can probably find another venue nearby.

Shinagawa scheduling:

xbro's picture

Alright, Shinagawa it is. Since we don't have a clear organizer maybe we'd have problems making scheduling decisions etc.. so I`d like to take the liberty to suggest a schedule.

With Shaun and Mori's approval I'd feel comfortable stating that this will roughly be the way we'd schedule this. I don't know restaurants or Karaoke places in Shinagawa so that`s about my main concern.

Proposed schedule.
One. We will be gathering at this Shinagawa hotel lobby from 5pm - 6pm.
http://www.intercontinental-strings.jp/english/access/on_foot_a.html

Two. Find a izakaya 6:15pm - 8:00pm (should be easy in Shinagawa)

Three. And then maybe try to find a Karaoke place or bar or something. A karaoke place might actually work out for us if anyone wants to come out with their labtops.

(the forum text input seems a bit buggy and I couldn`t display 1,2,3 in numbers..)

after that, depending on how it is I may be heading down to Shinjuku.
Let me know what you guys think.

Scott

Meeting in the Shinagawa

Drupalace-1's picture

Meeting in the Shinagawa hotel lobby, followed by izakaya, sounds good. I suggest free beer for whoever can name a nice izakaya with WiFi!

What's the best way to coordinate with lost people, late arrivals, etc.? One person volunteer a cell phone number, or something fancier involving Twitter, or what?

Thanks Scott for the suggestion. That should work out for most of us.

Can I also make a suggestion? Considering this drop-in will be held in Japan, I would like to make Japanese as the official language and broken English as the common language of this meet up. All native English speakers will be asked to be patient with non-natives and also speak in plain and clear English :p

As I mentioned earlier, I don't want anyone to be hesitant about participating because of the language we'll be using to communicate with each other.

Official Language

Dokuro's picture

Hi,

As to the official language:

"Can I also make a suggestion? Considering this drop-in will be held in Japan, I would like to make Japanese as the official language and broken English as the common language of this meet up. All native English speakers will be asked to be patient with non-natives and also speak in plain and clear English"

I don't really see the need for this.

I tried to set this meet up as just a casual meeting, for people who are intrested in Drupal, and are in Japan. I don't feel there needs to be an official language, just be who you are and come as you are. I am sure we will all try to be respectful to people and what they can understand, but to make this "official", I don't see the need.

Not trying to sound rude here, but its a casual meeting, and I think at 1st, we should just leave it at that.

Regards,

Shaun

Shaun, I totally get your

dokumori's picture

Shaun, I totally get your point and I also don't see the need for setting an official language. Don't take it seriously because it's just a joke. But at the same time I want to point out that some people are not confident with the fluency of their English and my previous comment was posted to encourage them to participate.

hola

setvik's picture

I live in Shiga (next to Kyoto), but just finished scrounging up enough money to make it to Tokyo for the 4th and am really looking forward to swapping ideas, and pow-wowing with all of you about Drupal.

It's only a few days until the 4th, but since several people have mentioned they'd like to learn more about using Drupal at the meet-up, what do you guys think about structuring a portion of the meetup for short site intros and a few short informal presentations / mini-workshops with Q&As...

Site-intros are great b/c they show the range of sites and functionality you can build with Drupal and provide everyone an opportunity to ask the site's creator what modules she used and/or how she built it: say like 10 minutes per person for site introductions & Q&A (we could adjust the time based on how many people have sites they'd like to introduce).

And then if there are a few specific topics that people would like to dive into in more depth, a few 15 min. informal mini-presentations / workshops could be really helpful and get discussion going. Would anyone be interested in some mini-presentations/workshops? If so, what topics? Drupal 5? Drupal 6? Drupal 7? theming? module selection? module development? Views? Views development?

I would be happy to do a short workshop on module development or selection, configuring/developing with Views, Date, Calendar, CCK, or Subdomain, contributing Drupal.org modules, or setting up a Drupal development environment if there's enough interest in one of those topics.

~6-8 site intro's and ~3 mini-workshops would take about 2 - 2 1/2 hours.

If enough people are interested in doing something like this, there's a few things that we would need to figure out ahead of time:

  • translation may be helpful/necessary for site intro's and workshops: Mori-san, would you be able to help with that? could anyone else help on that end (either from Japanese -> English or visa versa)?
  • an Izakaya with internet access
  • a reserved room at that Izakaya with internet access and wall sockets (bonus points for a room with a wall we can project onto). Anyone up for scouting out (and reserving) a room at an Izakaya where we might be able to do this?
  • a projector (could anyone bring one?)

What do you guys think? Would a couple of hours of structured time like this be helpful?

In the meantime, I'll post an event with signups enabled so that we can get a better idea of how many people can make it. Please sign up if you can come :-).

Drupal 6? Drupal 7?

Drupal Dojo & DimDim

Hi all,

Not a local Drupler in Japan, but seeing how big Japan is and setvik has to travel from Kansai to Kanto for this, I just want to point out the use of DimDim. If you join the Drupal Dojo group, they provide access to their DimDim account for use for free. Just look under their How-to session.

http://groups.drupal.org/node/2191/howto

Hope it can help more people!

whoops

setvik's picture

Just read through the thread more carefully and realized everyone's shooting for something more informal.
If no one's keen on site-intro's / mini-workshops, no worries. I'm just happy to meetup :-) What do you guys think?

I like the idea

kays's picture

Hi setvik,

Thank you for coming over from Shiga, and thank you for your suggestion.
As a newbie Drupaler, I definitely love the idea of presentation.
I have so much to learn from you experts.

If we want informal meeting, we can have it separately and personally.
We can go to hanami or Akihabara in the following day if we like.
I think presentation is good for this first meeting.

http://www.comejapan.com/

Bringing things together

Drupalace-1's picture

Thanks to all for recent added comments. Should we do formal presentations or keep it an informal gathering? Tough question. My take:

For a first meeting, a formal structure is difficult; we don't know each other, and thus don't really know everyone's interests, level of experience, and so on. On the other hand, a serious presentation or two would be interesting!

Once the group is gathered and settled, how about these three activities, in order:

  1. Quick round of self-introductions, including brief experience with Drupal. Everybody participates. 1-2 minutes/person.
    No equipment/preparation required.

  2. Site overview. Pick a site or two, show what you're doing, answer questions. Volunteers only. 10 minutes/person?
Proper presentation space (projector, etc.) would be nice, but just laptop, network connection, and loud voice may be enough.

  3. Detailed presentation (mini-workshop). Volunteers only. 15-20 minutes each?
Proper presentation space (projector, etc.) required.

It'd be great if at least one person is willing to do #3, though it'd be best to suggest your topic, and the time required, in this thread. That way we'll find out how much total time is needed for the longer presentations, and make sure that people don't duplicate the same topic, or pick a topic that's too much too hard or too easy for the group.

Or does anybody have a topic you'd like to see a presentation on? Suggest it here, and maybe someone else will say "sure, I can do that".

I myself am happy to do #2 (site overview).

Final question: Sorry if I missed it, but did someone volunteer to be de facto leader for all this? Best to have one final decision-maker!

What I`m researching

xbro's picture

Thanks for the added attempts to further organize. 4/4 might feel very fast so feel free to carry on 4/5 if anyone feels like it. While we start to gather at the lobby depending on how big the group is, maybe me and a couple guys could start looking for a place with room early.

I agree that "#1. Intro" might be needed either in Japanese or English, as a matter of fact I was thinking about starting here online so that I wouldn't have to repeat myself, but I'll withhold. I think which ever language we each feel comfortable with at the time would be fine.

With regards to "#2.", I'm a Drupal newbie so I look forward to listening when it comes to technology discussions for this meeting. What I do is somewhat in the realms of building freestyle concepts and services in conjunction with straight PHP codes organized in classes and database tables so I`m not sure if I'd be talking about what I'm doing specifically yet as it has little to do with Drupal (maybe later on). If you have anything that you want to show off, by all means do so I might be able to help on the business side.

With regards to #3,

1. My world revolves around databases so I want to figure out how to query data from a non-drupal Mysql table and display it anyway I like in Drupal, in the most organized object oriented way possible calling functions from maybe a couple custom PHP classes in a includes directory in a module? Can’t find a good simple tutorial anywhere for this for Drupal, it`s CCK and Views right?

2.There are other things like how to add custom functionality for member users that I`d like to know but I think all in all my understanding of Drupal would limit my understanding at this point.

3.If anyone could let me know on the state of the Drupal market in Japan, that' another thing I'd like to discuss. Is everyone in Japan talking about it, or is it like something that J corporations haven't embraced yet but will likely in the near future. I`m even thinking about getting together a Drupal specialist unit if the opportunity arises.

4.One thing in Japanese Drupal doesn`t spell naturally.
How do you spell it???

http://drupal.jp/ suggests

Garrett Albright's picture

http://drupal.jp/ suggests ドルーパル for pronunciation, but just uses the alphabetic spelling throughout to refer to it. Likewise with http://drupal-jbox.net/ .

setvik, you are such a cool

setvik, you are such a cool guy for actually coming all the way from Shiga for this meet up! iirc there was a meetup in the Kansai area, so you should also get in touch with those people to organise another event in your area.

about your question on using OO / custom tables, I would suggest looking at the source code of simpletest module, although it wouldn't give you enough information if you want to leverage the node system.

drupalace - I'd be happy to volunteer as a leader/dictator, but if there is a possibility of having a subsequent / regular meetup after this one, having someone based in japan would be far more beneficial.

I like your suggestion on activities. But from my experience, I don't know if #3 would work. Generally finishing presentations within the time limit is always challenging. Also as you pointed out, people's level of experience may vary. Maybe having #3 as optional breakup sessions will work well, as people can choose which session to participate. This would also eliminate the need for a proper space / equipment, as we will be broken up into smaller groups.

===================

Sounds good to me.

re: presentations. Dokumori: that makes sense - an ad-hoq approach is probably best and not having to worry about projectors and such is a definite bonus...

Anyone know an internet-enabled Izakaya? or Karaoke box?

Site intros: I'm working on a couple of sites: creativechalk.com and eslwell.com and would be happy to answer any questions about how they're set up, what modules i used, et cetera, if there's something on one of those sites anyone would like to know how to do.

@cloneofsnake: thanks for the dimdim heads up. I'll definitely check that out. I've always wanted to attend the drupaldojo sessions but never been able 'cause they're going when I'm asleep. Getting some sessions going in this timezone could also be a great way to help out businesses here in Japan trying to evaluate/learn Drupal.

@dokumori: Yeah, there may be enough people to get a Kansai meetup going now. When i organized the kansai meetup last year, the group was still small and only 4 made it (including DrupalAce virtually from Tokyo), but now that the group is growing a bit, there may be enough. I'll start asking around after the Tokyo meetup.

See you guys Saturday.

Dokuro's picture

Just like to say thanks to everyone, this thing is really getting underway. I have been away on vacation with my family, broke my emobile card (tip: don't ever try to use the vodafone drivers to get it to work in linux, it kills the card!). So have been unplugged for a while now.

In case people didn't see Dokumori posted it as an event here: http://groups.drupal.org/node/20751 .

Look forward to seeing everyone. Did we find a good location yet? Another idea, if we have the wifi station, we could always get a Karaoke room, big tables, drinks (careful with the laptops), food, music and privacy, just an idea. Also a mic to introduce each other.

Drupal J Spelling

xbro's picture

Garett thanks for the "ドルーパル" reference.

Kyoko-san,

summary trans + alpha:
I've got J encoding issues figured 99.9% but I am starting to give up on dealing with those who post into databases in probably SJIS encoding(send SJIS email etc..). I wonder if the major corporations are manually converting specific text patterns one by one to deal with what feels like a last inch problem in order to perfectly deal with J encodings. I also have what seems like French fonts that don't get inserted correctly into DB, I am wondering what is going on..

venue

dokumori's picture

I've called up a couple of caraoke boxes, but they are not that cheap.

(the price is per person)

Karaoke yumeno suke:
Until 19:00 - 150yen/30min
After 19:00 - 500yen/30min
http://tinyurl.com/karaoke-shinagawa

Big echo Shinagawa:
Until 19:00 - 300yen/30min
After 19:00 - 750yen/30min

so if we spend 3 hours there, we'll be paying 3000yen / person just for the venue. I would rather spend that money on food and drinks at some izakaya. I might try booking a table for 10 people at some izakaya. what do you think? If I don't get any response by tomorrow, I'll go ahead and book a table somewhere.

====================

I'm Shin living in Kanagawa pref. near Tokyo. (Not so near, I suppose)
I'm very new to this group and also to Drupal itself.

I have a blog site constructing with Movable Type but am planning to move it to a new site using Drupal.
And I have to make some sites using Drupal too (to tell the truth, I'm a kinda web designer)

But, there are few information about Drupal in Japanese, so I want a chance to discuss about Drupal here in Japan.

Maybe I can go to this meeting. I'm looking forward to see everyone here, too.

Groups.Drupal

@kyoko さん

@setvik

Views? Views development?

I just wrote in the comment to kyoko-san, I'm very interested in and astonished at "CCK & Views".
I soon learn how to use CCK (of course, not all of them).
But as to Views, though I somehow know the strongness about it, but don't understand how to use it.

So, personally I'm eager to learn how to use Views (with CCK).

Shinagawa suggestion:

xbro's picture

Dokumori,

I'm surprised at the prices of the Karoke at Shinagawa, and our group just got bigger so I agree we should start looking for a place. Just a suggestion maybe Shinagawa isn`t the smartest place to wine and dine and maybe one or two stations away might be better. We could keep Shinagawa as the starting place and just move one or two stations off to Tamachi or Hamamatsu-cho.

Group kind of blew up here. I am sure we can make it happen, also, this is just the 1st meet, we can make it what it is. Keep it simple, get to know each other and from there, the next one we can make it more. Great to see the group growing, and linking the English and Japanese together. Good deal!

And,

I think so too. Knowing each other is what is most important at the first meeting.

But, I'm a little bit nervous because there're so many English speaking people :-p
Maybe more than Japanese haha :-)

Anyway I'm lookin forward seeing you all.

Does anyone have a PC-Card or Express Card wifi card (emobile, Willcom, softbank, et cetera) that gives you internet access from anywhere?

If someone has that, we could plug the wireless router into that computer and create our own wireless access point...

That would free us to go anywhere that's big enough to take us :-)

9j8 is thinking about

dokumori's picture

9j8 is thinking about bringing 2-3 people, so that'll be over 20. Damn, I never expected the number to be so big but it's brillant!!

Scott - we picked Shinagawa because it would be convenient for Kyoko. As long as we don't move too far away we'll be fine.

Kayskay - We can switch seats every once in a while, so it'll still be just fun even if we end up in izakaya, I'm sure :) Besides, I can't drink much and want to eat food so I can't give you much choice! :p

I think I'll go ahead and book a table somewhere in Shinagawa. I don't think we'll be able to fit anywhere otherwise. If anyone has suggestions/objections, please do call me at my mobile. Cheers!

===============

Scott - kyoko

20/51

Shin-gdo_J's picture

まあ、そこはお互いになるべく話しかけあうなどして(笑)・・・シャイな僕には難しいので話しかけてください(^_^;;

===============

that'll be over 20. Damn, I never expected the number to be so big but it's brillant!!

We have 51 members here, so over 20 means about half of them will gather tomorrow ?
Non-members are included in the number, so that is exaggerated a little, but anyway it's great!

Certainly if over 20 people come along, we may not be able to talk to everyone of them, as kaysay-san mentioned, but everyone will try to talk to as much people as they can .... :-p
And, I am very shy so please talk to me !

Anyway I'm looking forward seeing everyone tomorrow.

I've booked a table for 22 ppl

dokumori's picture

Apologies for those who do not want to go to an izakaya, but I couldn't find any other venue. I've booked a table at a izakaya called Amataro at 18:00 under Sugimoto (my surname).

http://r.gnavi.co.jp/g306078/map1.htm

So the plan is to meet at the hotel lobby at 17:00, find and chat with each other and wait for people to arrive.

Sorry if it's a bad decision, but this will probably be the last meetup in Tokyo that I'll organise, so you can find a better organiser :p
We'll get kicked out of the place after 2hrs. We can wander around to find a better venue then.

============================

http://r.gnavi.co.jp/g306078/map1.htm

Drupal Ace

===========================

Thank you very much everyone! I never thought I would be meeting so many fine Drupallers in Tokyo! From my experience, the key to making an open-source project flourish is to have fun grass-root activities to build a good community. After tonight's meetup, I got a feeling that such base might actually be built and it made me very happy.
Because the event was ended up in organised by me, it turned out to be totally disorganised but it was fun and that's all it counts :p
Drupal Ace kindly volunteered to become an organiser for subsequent meetups and some people made really useful suggestions so subsequent meetups will be much better I'm sure. (I'll share with you those suggestions later)
I'm still having a slight buzz from such a fun event, but I have to wake up early tomorrow so I shall go to bed. zzz...

Shin

Thank you very much for all atendees. i enjoyed yesterday's meeting very, very much.

Unfortunately, I couldn't talk to all of them because more people than expected joined there. I also couldn't talk with Shaun who first start up thi meet, so here again, I thank you very much for holding such a nice event.

Personally, thank Stein for teaching very kindly about how to use Views, your site is amazing!
and thank kyoko for talking lots of things and wonderful and interesting presentaion of Geodosu.
Also thank GIM folks for talking about Drupal books.

And love to mori for nice organization (yeah, you DID !)

Let's keep effort for activating this group and Drupal in Japan !

See you next time ! I'm lookin forward to it.

drupal-tseach for PostgreSQL full text indexing

kuwamura's picture

http://github.com/mikl/drupal-tsearch/

Acquia

>Shaun

GIM、Opendream

It was great

Dokuro's picture

Hi everyone,

It was great fun. I wish I could have talked to people more.

I have an idea for a next meeting. Since this last one was a general meeting, maybe next time we could pick a topic, and go over it. Example: Views, CCK and Flash Video, or something that people want to learn. Then maybe have a general meeting every 3 months or so?

Maybe we could make a poll on different topics and vote for it.

How does this idea sound to people?

Again, great to meet people.

Shaun

Yes, more meetups :)

PawelPohl's picture

Hey everyone,

I second Shaun's idea that we should have more meetings in the future, especially since I missed the first one :( As for me, I'd love to learn more about upgrading 5.x --> 6.x, maybe hear from some people with big sites that upgraded, as well as i18n and related issues. Is anybody good at this?

Best

more meeting is welcom

osonoi's picture

Hello everyone.
I agree, too. Our site becomes public today. ( http://www.linuxfoundation.jp ) But I am still studing Drupal.
So picking up a topics and studing together is great. How about a place?
If meeting is about 10 people, I will ask my boss to use our office in Kioi-Cho.
We have projector. Or any other better place?

Cheers
Osonoi

So here's what we discussed

dokumori's picture

So here's what we discussed about our next meetup. Sorry it took me so long to post it.

Organising upcoming events
- Drupal Ace kindly volunteered to be the organiser. However, having a couple other co-organisers always help, as they can exchange ideas/thoughts and split tasks/responsibilities. If anyone is willing to volunteer, please contact Drupal Ace (Shawn, would you be interested?)

Structure
Shin's thoughts - since the participants' level of expertise vary, he said he would feel more comfortable if there are two types of meetups, one for beginners and another for advanced users so he wouldn't feel like he is taking up all of advanced users' time. He thought maybe having an expert's meetup as the first half, then a general one afterwards.

FYI, a user group in London used to hold two meetups every month, one for beginners and the other for developers. Although it was a lot of work for the organisers, it helped us build a solid user/developer base.
The important (and difficult) bit is to somehow get new people to come. The meetup becomes a bit less useful after an year or two. The UK group solved this problem by organising a series of themed events, such as Drupal for NGOs, enterprises, publishers, musicians, artists and so on. Some meetups became monthly, some one off or less often. They usually have a very good turn out (approx. 30-50 people) with a number of new faces.

venue
Johnny thinks it would be good to find a university which would be willing to provide a space for our meetup.

In London, companies that use Drupal / enthusiastic about supporting the community provides a venue for free. For the themed meetups, which I mentioned above, companies / organisations such as Sun Microsystems, Greenpeace UK, Amnesty International hosted the events.

(sorry, gotta go. don't have the time to translate this to Japanese atm)

Thanks Mori

My job is Drupal evangelist. :-)

Maybe decide on which Days and Time.

xbro's picture

I think one way to do it is to decide on which days (e.g. every 1st and 3rd Saturday etc..) and the specific time and place. And see what happens. If more than 10 people start to show up, we can start looking for sponsors towards industry and universities, which I both think are terrific ways to promote Drupal. But before that we'd need to maybe get solid presentations(1-3) going and a guy who`s good on the microphone(host).

Like we can gather at this place every (1st&3rd Saturday at 5-7pm)
http://www.officehimiko.com/newlaunge (if nobody shows up at least the drinks are free)

Personally I dig the meeting theme, like we can have a day for newbies, days for developers, days for CCK&Views etc.. and if we ever get to a situation to ask Universities and Companies for space and free pizza :) that`d be great!

Scott

Late thanks to all for the meet-up!

Drupalace-1's picture

Sorry for this late addition to the follow-up; I've been out of town.

First, thanks to everyone who helped make the meeting possible, especially to Mori for the organization and the unpleasant task of handling the bill collection.

Now that many people know each other, it would be great to hold a more structured meeting next time. As someone suggested, we can begin with structured presentations, even on more advanced topics, and then break up for informal talking/drinking/etc. All that's needed are volunteers willing to do presentations. Topics like interesting uses of CCK and Views would be perfect. As Paweł mentioned, multilingual site creation will also be of big interest to this group.

I think, too, everyone would be interested in seeing site overviews of interesting projects like Sten's English teacher community site, or Crystal Koi's sites, or the Linux Foundation site. In informal discussions like the other night, only a few people at a time were able to gather around a laptop to hear overviews, so it'd be nice for the whole group to have that chance.

A location equipped for presentations will be important. Osonoi, can you ask your company about using its meeting room, and confirm how many people that'll work for? Even if your company can allow the use, though, we'll still need to find an appropriate venue for bigger groups. Office Himiko does look convenient, though only up to 12 people.

What's next? Maybe it's time to start asking who would like to make a presentation at a next meeting. The presenters' schedules will suggest the meeting date, the suggested topics will determine who wants to attend, and that attendance list will decide how big a space we need. So, who wants to volunteer (or nominate) a presentation topic?

Finally, how about we begin discussing the next meeting on a new thread? This one's getting pretty full!
