Hello folks!
I looked around and couldn't find anyone doing this already, but apologies if you were and I've stepped on your toes…
But I've decided to start a Melbourne CiviCRM meetup group, which will be suitable for users and developers.
Not much to look at right now, but watch this space: http://www.meetup.com/MelbourneCiviCRM/

There was some talk on the CiviCRM forums a year or so ago about an Australian group, but I don't think that ever came to anything. I'd definitely be interested in a Melbourne group, as I would like to get to know who has been using CiviCRM (besides you, Gordon and myself). It might also be good to advertise this to the wider non profit community to try and get some people who are using CiviCRM but not necessarily developing to come along. It would be really good to get some case studies from them. I'm positive there are more people using CiviCRM in Melbourne than it appears, and I would like them to come out of the woodwork and share their experiences.
CiviCRM in wider non-profit community
Good idea @ericaordinary.
Perhaps orgs like infoxchange and pubworks might be able to help reach out to other orgs?

Sydney?
I know there are more and more users in Sydney, but didn't really get much response when i was looking around awhile back to setup something.
I'd be keen to attend if there is one when I am in melb. I can show a case study of a fairly big implementation as well if people are interested.
Of course, if there are any new sydney-based civicrmers I'd be keen to start up a meetup here as well.

I've found quite a few interested 'users' around the country recently, so will start promoting early in the new year and see what we get.
I had a heads up from Eileen (part of core CiviCRM team) that she'll be in Oz early next year, so we'll try and start our first meeting with her.
Likely she'll be going to Sydney to…

And by all means, lets get a Sydney one going, I think there's more of you up there, but the commute is a bit much for me… :-/
perhaps #civiCRM-au ?
Might be nifty to coordinate a civicrm meeting at the same time in different cities... and link up via IRC and twitter... using a common hashtag - so people in places without the critical mass of bodies to meet in person could also participate?

Sounds like a plan… We have our first meetup announced here:

Jan 25th, spread the word and I'll hook up some sort of internet based thingummy so everyone can join, say you're attending the meetup and all details will be revealed soon :-)
That date's a conflict for me
That date's a conflict for me I'm afraid.
I'm trying to facilitate a geek gathering at the night market for locals and LCA folks who might still be around.
But I'll follow a twitter stream :)
