New Groups (Canberra & Melbourne)

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Just letting everyone know that there are now region specific groups for Canberra and Melbourne, I have added links to both on the Main Australia page, as well as linking back to Australia from the Melbourne page (I don't have moderator access to the Canberra page).

I'd suggest you joing the group relevant to your region, and when posting events/jobs you check both your region and Australian groups on the node creation form that way they are displayed on both groups.

I will still be posting Melbourne events to both groups, but this affords people the ability to subscribe to the group for only their region if they find the Australia group to contain too much information that isn't relevant to them.

As well as making it easier for people to find the group for their region using the gdo group search.

I just want to point out without any enforced sub-group system that these new groups really should be downplayed or possibly even temporarily sidelined, as if it's up to the end-users to choose which group they should share with then they will likely just not share at all.

What this means is that if 'Fantastic job offer' is posted to the Melbourne group because 'Fantastic company' resides in Melbourne and they figure they're just after a local anyway, they may miss out on 'Awsomest developer' who's located in Sydney who they would be more than happy to allow tele-commuting due to his epic awsomeness.

It also means that if people forget to cross post back to Australia, or people don't know about the Australia group that some ideas may slip by people that could really benefit from them. Case in point, the Mentoring that we do in Melbourne, if we weren't cross posting it or a user was not in the Australia group they might not see or hear about it and decide that they should be offering the same sort of event in their local area.

While it's easy to say that we could just continue using the Australia group and cross post to the regional groups, as they aren't sub-groups it comes down to people manually following that guideline.

Just my 2c and happy to discuss further.

Definitely a good idea to

Definitely a good idea to create the sub-groups, and for posters to remember to cross-post where appropriate. We do need the ability to narrow down to location specific information, this will definitely make life easier!

I'm hoping that when sub

I'm hoping that when sub groups becomes available we can just fold the group in as a subgroup of Australia.

But until the I'll be posting everything I add to both groups.

But YOU can't make others cross post, unless you edit all posts that others make and cross post them. So if there is no way YET to enforce cross posting with a sub-group setup then would it not be best to wait until there is? Why fracture the group now in a possibly damaging approach when it was working fine up until this point, if we're only looking at a few months till it can be done correctly...

Agree

I think I agree with Stuart here, this seems like its just going to fracture the group now without a lot of upside. There are already location specific categories/tags that people can use to filter content.

Awhile back, there was actually a sydney specific group and there was a large discussion about keeping it or folding it in and the consensus was to keep the group at this level. I know there is more traffic now than there was back then, but I don't see a compelling argument at this point to break it up. I think the same argument was rehashed/applied last year when the central coast group started their own gdo group, and was ultimately closed/unapproved.

Joining multiple groups ?

"I'd suggest you joing the group relevant to your region" - does this mean you can only join a single group?

In my case I live halfway between Sydney and Canberra, and I would want to know what's happening in either group.

You can join any group you

You can join any group you like! I'm also in the New York group for example. :P

about time!

Thanks Brian! How about we give this regional group thing a go and if it doesn't work out then we can chastise ourselves for being so liberal and carefree and all get drunk.
