Hello fellow Drupalers,

The Sydney meetups theme for May is 'Integrating Drupal with external data-sources' and we need YOU!

We are looking for people of all skill levels to propose presentations for May that are relevant to the theme.

This theme is fairly broad, but some ideas could be:

  • Integrating Drupal with Twitter
  • Integrating Drupal with Facebook
  • Integrating Drupal with map providers
  • Integrating Drupal with LDAP
  • Creating your own API in Drupal

So, we need you to:

  • offer to present on a topic, or
  • tell us want you want to hear about

Just add your ideas to this thread to help contirbute!

Happy to present, what date is the meet-up?

Hi,

I live in Melbourne, but happen to be in Sydney for 6-10 May.
Could give you a preview of my session at DrupalCon Portland: http://portland2013.drupal.org/session/should-have-made-left-turn-albuqu...
What date is the meetup?

Best,
Rik

Hey Rik, The meetups are on

gollyg's picture

Hey Rik,

The meetups are on the third Thursday of the month - which would be the 16th May. So you just need to plan to fly to Portland via Sydney ;)

Thinking about it, even if you can't make this meetup, I reckon a theme of 'Mapping with Drupal' could justify a whole meetup.

Will see if I can change flight

rdeboer's picture

Hmm... Actually I'm already flying via Sydney, but on Friday 17th. I'll see if it's not too costly to change and go a day earlier.

Sure, We are still curating

gollyg's picture

Sure,

We are still curating the talks, and the new format means we have a couple of lightening talks, and a longer 20 minute presentation.

So don't go spending too much money unless you really want to!

Mine's only 5 minutes

rdeboer's picture

Ok. No certainly won't go overboard with the dollars.

The DruplCon Portland presentation I'm finalising at the moment is one of seven 5 minute presentations, so is "lightning" style. Although it could be stretched if there's interest.

For a full hour presentation see my DrupalCon Sydney talk: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iznuDhjAFbg

Twitter/Facebook and LDAP

AndrewBoag's picture

Hi all,

We have done a few projects integrating Drupal with Twitter, Facebook and LDAP as authentication sources, including SSO over multiple web applications including Moodle and Mahara.

We mostly do this with SimpleSAMLphp but have used some other approaches.

We recently included this functionality within the technology suite in Australia's largest MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) application open2study.com from Open Universities.

We would be happy to do a presentation on some of our thoughts and knowledge on this.

Andrew

That sounds great Andrew. I

That sounds great Andrew. I am sure the SSO would be of interest to a lot of people.

We are going to wait a little while before we finalise the agenda, so that others can put forward some ideas, but I think your suggestion sounds really good.

See you tonight?

Sydney Drupal meetup - Speakers Needed!

mkostrzewa's picture

Hi everyone,

We still need more speakers for May's meet-up. As James has mentioned the theme for May's meet-up is 'Integrating Drupal with external data-sources'.

So if you're interested in presenting a talk, please post your ideas on this thread. Thank you to those who have already up their hand up.

Also, if anyone is interested in sponsoring drinks for the night, please email me at mmkostrzewa@gmail.com

Looking forward to seeing you all there :)

Would be interested in

larowlan's picture

Would be interested in presenting (over Google Hangout from Central QLD) on how we did the Course Information System integration for uts.edu.au. I could line up an in-person stand-in in case of technical difficulties.

Sounds really interesting.

gollyg's picture

Sounds really interesting. The only issue is really the remote bit - will check with the committee in the next meeting if it is do-able.

Is there someone else who was on the project that could present in person, if required?

larowlan, last meeting we

larowlan, last meeting we weren't able to amplify at all, so we had to all speak up. This is because there are some rooms off the main room where courses were being held. Unless we had everybody in the hangout with headphones, I just dont think the peeps would be able to hear you.

Time for another Sydney trip! :)

Will talk to the others and

Will talk to the others and see if I can get a volunteer

It may be different next

It may be different next month. I might be worth checking with Fishburners if there will be any training next month.

Services

jackmc's picture

Hi Guys,

The last meetup was my first, I found it really interesting.

I can do a quick demo of Services that shows content being jsonified and exposed by a view, then read into a "separate" project (a PHP file for the demo).

If people are interested I'll polish it a bit and am happy to present.

Hey jackmc, I would love

Hey jackmc,

I would love someone to present on services and flip the data to show Drupal as the provider. We are still trying to gather more proposals then we will make some scheduling decisions. Stay tuned!

Book module import

murrayw's picture

I have recently written a module to import nested book data :
- takes file uploads (XML, HTML)
- parses them with SimpleXML
- produces a nested data structure, including footnotes.
- validation and correction step to iron out kinks in the data structure
- creates Books.

The code uses node api, form api and ctools plugin to abstract the processing step. The module shows that you can roll your own importer when you have specific use cases.

Weather Module

johnhorner's picture

I've been working on a module to display weather forecasts for Australian cities, just as a learning exercise.

The fun part was parsing the structure of the Bureau of Meteorology XML feeds. And when I say fun I mean not fun.

I could talk about that for five minutes if anyone's interested.

I have a couple of things I

rcross's picture

I have a couple of things I could talk about:

  • Compare/Contrast of feeds & migrate module for getting data into Drupal
  • Best practices for designing API's (will be based around a few case studies of API's designed for external systems that were integrated with Drupal)
  • Overview of different solution patterns for integration

Hi everyone,

Just a quick reminder tomorrow(Monday) we're finalizing the agenda for May's meet-up. So if there is a talk you would like give in the area of 'Integrating Drupal with external data-sources' this is your last change!

Again thank you to those to have already submitted their talks.

We're still looking for someone to sponsor drinks.

Looking forward to seeing you all there.

mkostrzewa's picture

Hi everyone,

We need someone to video this month's presentation at the meet-up.

Leave a reply here if you would like to record and/or if you can lend the equipment for the night.

Cheers,
Magda
