What is the point of this poll?
I don't understand what the point of this poll is? We don't have any type of official "australian drupal association" - though I know it has been brought up as an option. The current issue seems to revolve around whether there should be different organic groups on this site (groups.drupal.org) and in that context there is not really a concept of chapters or sub-groups.

The Point of the Poll
Ryan,
The point of the poll is to confirm whether or not there is a need for a separate Sydney group, which, as you know, I do not support. In this early stage I don't think it's justified and I agree with Gordon.
There shouldn't be too many levels at this time until we have some members to justify it.

Also
If you're going to post something like this - you need to cross post it to the sydney group. You can do this as part of your post, you don't need to create a second poll. I'm sure not everyone here is part of the sydney group and vice versa.

Cross-posting
After I posted the poll, I could not figure out how to cross-post. There doesn't seem to be a way to edit polls.

There is a need for both
We definitely need a group for all of Australia, but the local chapters need a way of communicating local events that are not relevant to others. It's unnecessary for everyone in Australia to receive "I can make it" and "I'm running late" messages.
Can you have subgroups or do we need one group for Australia and another for each local area (city or state)?

At this stage the amount of posts is just too low. The oldest post of the front page of the Australia group is 12 months ago. So 1 group is enough, and we don't need to fracture the Australian drupal community.

Yes
We can have "subgroups" but it's more important to have one strong national group then have the subgroups evolve naturally

At this stage the amount of content that is being posted and the number of people I don't see a point of having many groups. Just the Australia group is fine.
Once we get larger and the bandwidth is too high I think we will look at splitting up by state.

I used to think multiple
I used to think multiple groups, but watching the way g.d.o has evolved, the amount of posts we get in Australia doesn't support multiple groups. And, you can tag your post with a city if you like.
Don't send me messages from other cities
As long as I only get generic Australia information, that's fine. But I don't want to be bombarded with people organising drinks interstate. Let them organise that stuff on their own chapter - and just one note here, preferably with a meaningful subject title. Like "Sydney meetup November - go to Sydney group for more information". We've had 15? 20? emails about the Sydney Meetup. Surely that's gotta be frustrating for non Sydney ppl? Good thing I am in Sydney, and want to go. :)
If you take a look at the
If you take a look at the front page of the Australia group there is 12 months worth of posts. That is less the 1/week on overage.
This is an effort to create a stronger Drupal community in Australia. In the IT industry there are a lot of people who travel a bit and if they can co-inside their travel to a center when a meetup is being held they maybe about to go.
This is only a short to medium term thing. In the future when the amount of posts become much higher than they currently are then we would split it up into more regional area. I am talking about about 1-2 new posts every 1-2 days. Not 1 post every week.

Regional messages
As I don't live in Melbourne or Sydney, most of the traffic is a bit irrelevant, but splitting into city groups would only dilute an already slim bunch. It's not spam, only extra emails, so I'd prefer we all stay as one group. Just my $0.02 for today.
With the votes are leaning
With the votes are leaning towards regional. The typical division of Australian into 2 (as per sales forces I've seen) is North and South. North = NSW, ACT, QLD, NT. South = VIC, SA, WA, TAS.
Is this really going to help us?
This is a very small cross
This is a very small cross section. 13 out of 160 members.
In the short term until we have created a more vibrant community I think we need to stand as 1.

Yes, good call. 13 votes
Yes, good call. 13 votes does not suggest a rising tide of members demanding change.
Representation?
While I would like to hear from more people as well, isn't a poll/survey supposed to be representative of the greater group? I think it would be more accurate to say there is approximately equal numbers of people that want a unified group and that what regional groups. Also, I'm not sure if anyone has looked at members of the sydney group (45) that may not be in the australia group (160). Coming from a country (America) who's voting percentage is notoriously low, I am more inclined to find ways of getting more votes instead of just dismissing the results because of the turn out.

Understood. You are arguing
Understood. You are arguing that people might not be interested in the Australia group because it's too broadly defined, so they're not here to vote in the first place.
I'm fairly dispassionate about this issue, to tell the truth. I'm focussed on getting things happening on the ground, since then people will naturally use this resource more.
