I was doodling in Inkscape... and inspired by snugglepot and cuddlepie thought the druplicon might work well as a gumnut.

This is the result.

Nice

skwashd's picture

I like the look of this. I think it is more inclusive than the opera house based logo we currently have. Did you try with the new Drupal branding? ie the new font.

I looked around for the font

kattekrab's picture

I looked around for the font - but apparently it's a logo mark - not a font. Although if you have different font suggestions, I'd be happy to look at 'em.

Ah

skwashd's picture

I'm happy with the current font in the logo, I just thought it might be a good idea to use the new font. Given it isn't a font, I am less enthusiastic about my suggestion now. I don't know if the new logo would go with the font suggested in this thread. Feel free to ignore my suggestions. I'm happy with the logo as it is.

Actually now that I think of it, how about we add the bridge to the opera house logo and be done with it? ;)

yes

sime's picture

I love it, I vote we replace the opera house logo asap.

Very nice

barwonhack's picture

May Gibbs would be impressed.
I wonder if it will scale okay. Perhaps the Drupal icons need to be a bit larger relative to the leaves.

Much better than the Opera house which is just too Sydney-centric for my linking.

Add some gumnut caps!

websupportguy's picture

I'd say the druplicons would look better if they actually had May Gibbs style gumnut caps.

Opera house is iconic though.

mariooo's picture

Opera house is iconic though. I'm not sure anyone outside australia would make the connection with Gum Leaves...

What about just the Southern

grantshow's picture

What about just the Southern Cross and 'Drupal Australia'? It's less busy and would scale a lot better. Also, just a few points:

Might seem like nit-picking, but if we're representing the nation we might as well do it accurately!

Grant

thanks for the flag info

BernieCram's picture

Hey Grant, Thanks for the link to the flag info. The domain name is a bit misleading, no long hair and flared jeans on there!

Yes I agree the stars should be correct number of points. I'm not so sure that it needs to be simplified though, if its just for an image for the groups header the extra decoration is not really a problem. I don't think that it needs to have exact positioning and I like the way that the bottom star being a bit larger suggests the federation star.

If it was simplified to just the sourthen cross you could spread the word by giving stickers to ute drivers, who knows the shire could become the worlds new drupal hotspot. :)

Cheers

just a quick note: The

kattekrab's picture

just a quick note: The positioning and size of the stars in my logo design is based on an astronomical photograph of the southern cross - not on the australian flag and the different number of points based on the idea of representing the brightness.

There are actually a lot of different ways the southern cross is represented on flags / logos... this isn't meant to be the same as the flag.

Just thought I should point out it was an intentional choice on my part, not an ignorant accident.

good, but...

mossy2100's picture

I like it, sort of. They do look a bit like testicles. Maybe you could make one large Druplicon-gumnut. Or maybe, of you want something really Aussie-iconic, a kangaroo-Druplicon.

+1 for aussie testicles!

I'm all for it

MrKistic's picture

It's a great concept for the logo! As mentioned, it's much more inclusive than the Sydney icon we currently have. Although Mossy may have just ruined it for me...

Also I think non-Australians would get the association with the word Australia running through the middle of it :)

sorry :)

mossy2100's picture

...but if I thought it, other people could too. Or maybe I'm the only one with that kind of mind?

I did

rimian's picture

Don't worry, I thought it also...

I looks great!

Unfortunately, The Southern Cross as an icon has been trashed by the extreme right and racist groups. It no longer represents the cross section of Australia.

not a Eureka moment

sime's picture

Don't you mean the the Eureka flag? The southern cross is on heaps of flags let alone brand logos! Australian, NZ, state/territory, military...

southern cross

spyjournal's picture

if you go outside on a clear night and look up to the south you can see the southern cross without any political overtones

at the end of the day a logo is just a nice pic representing something - half of the people will feel it represents them, the other half wont

FWIW i think it looks nice

I have to admit...

solveitnow's picture

I love the logo. Actually I love both of them. I have to admit that I did see the testicles too but it brought a smile to my face so that's not so bad - so Mossy you're not the only one! Maybe it's because there's two of them and if there were one or three it might lose it's association...? Either way, both are very talented efforts and I wish I could do stuff like that.

Sounds like support is good

Sounds like support is good which is rare for design in a developer community. Let's get it up and bikeshed later?

2 cents

rcross's picture

I always appreciate seeing the effort people put forward on these items.

I personally am not a fan of the design (had similar flashes to Mossy about genitals) and would probably agree with Marioo. I think its also worth bringing it up at each of the various user group meetings to get broader concensus. I'll make sure to print a few copies and get feedback from the Sydney group next week.

Considering the current logo has been up for quite awhile, I don't think we need to rush to change it.

Thanks for your contribution, Donna!

The people whom this affects

nicksanta's picture

The people whom this affects are the ones who are regulars on g.d.o/australia - IE the ones who have overwhelmingly given support for the new logo.

Just put it up Ryan, most people won't even notice.

Also, just wondering - was

nicksanta's picture

Also, just wondering - was there a, err... "broader consensus" reached on the current logo when it was changed from the Australian coat of arms?

Consensus

rcross's picture

Consensus came from the (at that point) DrupalCamp Australia (and is also the origins of the logo). It was printed on tshirts which were at the event and batches of the tshirts were also given to representatives of other cities to take back and distribute. There were people from all the major cities and there were lots of very positive remarks about the logo and several comments suggesting that it be put on to the group site as the logo for the group. So, I think it was a couple weeks after the event when I posted it to the group description area.

Maybe it makes sense to propose this design for the upcoming DrupalDownunder and it might have a similar impact? Eitherway, I'll bring it up at the next meeting.

thanks

keep it blue

boztek's picture

This is a silly and minor issue so of course I feel compelled to jump in. In the end it does effect more than just g.d.o regulars and I'm assuming many regulars don't see the logo often because they get these discussions in email whereas new visitors will first arrive on the g.d.o page.

... whatever we end up with I for one would prefer keeping it predominantly a nice Drupal blue but that's just me.

The southern cross is used

dan_lennox's picture

The southern cross is used tastefully and maintains it's charm. Great typography, clean design and well placed elements.
Overall this looks great! Got my vote 100% :)

love it

I think it looks great - well done Donna

Wow - thanks so much for all

kattekrab's picture

Wow - thanks so much for all the kind words :)

some responses... number of points on the stars - The original version of the aussie flag had different numbers of points on the stars to represent their different brightness. They were 'simplified' for the official version ratified by the king at the time.

I was trying to make the bigger star echo the commonwealth star - representing all states and territories - as well as the southern cross we all see in the night sky - so thank you whoever it was that saw that in the design :) yay!

colour: I tried it with bluey-grey instead of brown... but ultimately, it does work better in brown... the connection to gumnuts is totally lost in blue :(

Testicles! I tried the design with 3 gumnuts... and I reckon it looks kinda naff.
See here - http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4149/5154026356_ff235f581c_o.png

I might try altering the size ratio of the 2 druplicons... but meh. Is it a big deal? They're clearly not testicles... if you think it and it makes you smile... then - you get a free smile for they day ;) Or is it a serious barrier?

I did a quick tally of votes for the design - 11 in clear support, 3 against, 4 not sure / not convinced for various reasons.

I'll admit I'm not a huge fan of the Sydney opera house representing all of Australia. It might be the most recognisable icon of Australia for many people overseas - but isn't this group for us? not for them?

MrKistic's picture

If anyone really thinks the gumnuts look like their testicles, I suggest they see a doctor immediately!

I agree with your last point too - it's not an ad for Australia, it's a group for all Australian drupalers. And while Sydneysiders may not notice it, the rest of Australia often gets a bit annoyed when things are very Sydney-centric, which the current logo is.

An american perspective of the land down under..

alan d.'s picture

On our travels through the USA and Mexico (approx. 7 months on the road now), it is the Kangaroo and Crocodile Dundee that have the greatest iconic representation of Australia.

I find that a bit sad ...

websupportguy's picture

For some reason I find that a bid sad. It's like saying that the iconic representation of America is Rambo and the squirrel.

Rambo?

skwashd's picture

I thought it was the Terminator and the squirrel. Or was it Homer Simpson?

Based on my travel experience, it isn't only the US where bang on about Mick, it is almost universal.

Thanks to everyone telling stories about riding kangaroos to school and sending them down the shops to pick up the beer/milk, many people don't believe me when I tell then we have them at my place.

If you want to upload a final version which is approximately the same size as the current logo on the front, and I think if the background is the same crappy yellow would make it fit best.

it's very good

It's a great logo Donna and I apologise profusely for suggesting that your beautiful little gumnuts look anything like jatz crackers.

On another note, are we still interested in having the Christmas Party at the warehouse? If so, please let me know the date.

Yeah it adds a nice touch. Nice to see something green.

Love it!

Marmalade's picture

Great work Donna! Very Australian without it being corny. :)

I too love the direction you took with it but would also vote for to see a version with the gumnut caps and for the leaf to be a little smaller thus making the drupalicon more of the focus. :) Lovin' the southern cross too...

Brilliant!
