Drupal 7 - how ready is it, really?

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Hi Folks

I'm about to start 3 new projects, 2 of them are really basic, so I'm definitely going to get myself started on D7 with those.

The third is a bit more advanced, as it contains an online entry system and sponsorship (ie needing Commerce, PayPal, etc).
Is Drupal 7 ready and stable enough for this yet? Or should I just stick with D6 for the moment?

Thoughts on this appreciated.

...busy with a D7 site, almost a week over deadline because I needed to debug a module myself.

d7 commerce

D7 and e-commerce is still a little off I would not recommend the commerce module yet, its still in alpha and the releases tend to break in the database layer constraints between releases. Once they are running beta's that should change. The rest of D7 is rocking I have delivered two projects on it all ready and and wheeling another out the door.

How ever if your project has a 6 month window for delivery. The I would do then following, since in the new commerce module you are simply attaching products to content types. You can flush out the website with all the content and roll a release with the current alpha. But keep that as snap shot test, that way once we are at beta, you will know how it all works and have built some of the views, required. Since its tightly coupled with views, its a really powerful system that is beyond flexible.

Gud'luck a tough spot doing a e-commerce site at this stage, if i had a good relationship with the customer I would highlight the new flexibility and that they are building the site on new tech, not the stuff leaving the back door. Ie, D7 will in the end have a longer support life cycle for them.

Hi, I am new to Drupal and

Hi, I am new to Drupal and would like to know if it is already possible, using Drupal 7, to to build a single-product ecommerce sites with Paypal - no shopping cart required? If so, what modules do I need for the Paypal function. If not, will it be possible soon? Alternatively, should I learn and use Drupal 6 and wait for Drupal 7 to evolve a bit more?
Thanks....

Hi John, IMO I would

Hi John, IMO I would recommend that you do this project in D6, D7 is still what can be considered "Bleeding edge" and many (loads) modules have not been ported to D7 yet (give it 3 - 6 months), but ultimately it's up to you. You can take a look at the PayPal module @ drupal.org/project/paypal, but this module is still in alpha and is D6 only, for D7 there is CommercePayPal but that's still in dev. Have you had a look at Ubercart?

Any updates here

It is now April and I have been doing lots of testing with D7 and there are still many modules not up to speed. I would like to know, if I build a new site based on D6, how hard will it be to upgrade to D7 later? Would it be better to just go with D7 and grow with it rather than try to switch over later?

@Max_Headroom Do you have an updated table? Did you finish what you wanted with the D6 site? is it live?

I suppose it all depends on

I suppose it all depends on the scope of your project and what modules you will need to use. I try to do all new projects in D7 if possible but if the project will rely heavily on a module that is not in D7 yet I will go D6. If you are confident in your coding abilities you can always try and port the modules you need to D7.
