Hey Mary,
Be ready to hear a different recommendation from just about anyone you ask. When we were shopping around, we had opposing reviews on just about every place we looked at. It's one of those things where there's a general group of hosts that are "good" and it really depends on what your personal experience ends up being. People have different expectations for their hosts (customer service, bandwidth, uptime, etc.).
With that said, we've had luck with Ubiquity Hosting (relatively inexpensive, decent offerings, and good customer support). A lot of people swear by Rackspace, but we didn't think the price was worth it. Our biggest client has had good luck with Media Temple. In GENERAL, you get what you pay for. If you end up going with Ubiquity let us know -- I think they have a decent referral program :)
Slicehost & Linode
Mary - I've had very good experiences with SliceHost (recently purchased by Rackspace). Since then, I've brought up some new sites at Linode - great experience so far, and they get very good reviews out there.

I ended up going with Linode, I figured the only way to learn is to jump in the deep end. :) I've spent most of the weekend reading through their library and setting up my site. I like the fact that they have an active community forum that you can post too and many users are running Drupal. Thanks for the Feedback.
