DrupalCon in South Asia? 2013?

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.
highermath's picture

Is the South Asian community ready to take on a DrupalCon, perhaps as soon as January 2013?

If so, now would be the perfect time to start discussing it. It would be great to open this discussion before DrupalCon Chicago, next month. Of course, if you are going to Chicago, we can have a very informal meeting there.

To be clear, there has been no discussion, let alone a decision of any kind by the Drupal Association. This is strictly a fact-finding mission by me to gauge the level of interest in your communities.

The best way to make this happen is for folks to support the idea and commit themselves to being involved should it come to pass.

In that tone, it is critical that nobody talks to prospective venues, sponsors, or suppliers, on or off the record. Doing so could kill the idea. Do not tag this DrupalCon India (or Pakistan or Bhutan...), or do anything to unreasonably set expectations.

You should also know that there is a semi-active Asia-Pacific Regional Organizing Group, based mostly in Australia. They would be involved in organizing an event in the region.

Please keep this discussion on the record and in this thread, at least for now. If anyone absolutely must contact me, please use the contact form.

For reference, the Drupal Association Events Plan, which is only somewhat out of date, is available at http://association.drupal.org/node/342

I have done my best to tag this appropriately. If it is mistagged, please change it, if you have permissions, or send me a note if you do not.

Trying to rope in owners of educational institutions

netbabu's picture

I am trying to rope in private owners of educational institutions/colleges in India to get involved in Drupal events. They have deep pockets but they are not aware of power of drupal. They are usually carried away by Microsoft, Intel, Oracle, etc.

As a serial entrepreneur cum technologist, I am pretty much confident of how drupal can shape up career/life of students and I know what kind of programs/events have to be organized in colleges. I am looking forward to connect with as many academics/professors/HODs to make this happen.

I hope this will create a strong foundation for South Asia conference in 2013!

Hello, Briefly, I'm the

sunitgala's picture

Hello,

Briefly, I'm the founder and CEO of Blisstering Solutions, a Drupal shop. We are bronze sponsors at DrupalCon Chicago, and were bronze at San Francisco as well. We are headquartered in Oakland (near San Francisco) and have 30+ employees in our Mumbai office.

It is really nice to see support from Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, and hopefully we can attract a few people from the Middle East and ASEAN. Most destinations are about a 3-hour flight New Delhi or Mumbai, presumably the most likely venues because they have the best international connectivity.

Our group has experience in organizing events, and will be delighted to help organize DrupalCon SouthAsia.

Please contact me directly (sunit.gala@blisstering.com) or via the contact form if there's anything the Drupal Association decision makers might need.

Sincerely,
Sunit.

Support from Drupal Hyderabad group

siva_epari's picture

Hi Drupalers

Nice to see this huge amount of response from the South asian community. Members of Drupal Hyderabad group are ready to support this conference and will definitely see to make it a success.

We discussed the same in our local group meet and maybe planning some runup events to the main conference to build up the heat. I would suggest all to make it a habit from now onwards to mention about the conference at all drupal events or whenever you meet new drupal group members to spread the awareness. What we need is a huge group of people(something around 10k or so) who know about this event well in advance so that they can plan accordingly. As this will be a major event in the south asian region, we should at least expect such level of awareness.

I would suggest the following points to build awareness of this event:

  1. Have a irc meeting regularly(maybe weekly)
  2. Put up a banner in your websites, blogs, etc. about these meets
  3. Hold D7 awareness meets & migration camps. Hint the audience about the conf there

Please put up more suggestions to pull more south asian drupalers to this thread.

Support From Bangalore User Group

anil614sagar's picture

Hi Everyone,

Nice to see great initiative from all around south Asian community. It's nice to see Drupal groups in Asia are becoming more and more active.

Here is my two cents to prepare for the large event.

  • Conducting regular meet-ups at own regions to make Drupal widespread.

  • Attract companies to sponsor the meet-up venues and make them involve.

  • Be more active in Drupal user groups of own regions like asking questions & answering questions.

  • Plan for Drupal Camps once in every 3 months or 6 months.

We are conducting regular meetups @ Bangalore. We will take this idea forward and will discuss in our meetups.

Drupal Workshops should be started

figover's picture

Hello guys,

I would encourage you that you should arrange Drupal Workshop in your cities and Drupal Seminars.

Then we would be able to arrange Drupal Con.

You can not do anything with just writing here. You should be practical.

Please contribute in drupal community. If you need any help about CVS, i will guide you.

Please become practical otherwise we would have nothing in our hands.

I am also arranging Drupal Workshops in my city http://groups.drupal.org/node/121339
