Hello all,

I've started working on a business plan where we'd also need a directory. I'm not really an IT guy, but if our project takes off, there might be chances that we get funding to do some development of a module such as Sobi2 for Joomla and contribute it to the drupal community.

I've just set up a wiki page to identify the features such a module should have.

Three questions:
- Could anyone help completing this list of features?
- Is there any developer interested in working on / contributing to the development of such a module?
- Since I'm not sure we get the money together on our own to be able to pay a professional developer to work out a first version of such a module, do you think there are chances to do some crowd-funding, for example through Kickstarter?

Regards

Simon

Let me get this straight...

You want a developer to donate their time, expertise and patience to assist you with a commercial project - and in return you'll benevolently contribute their code to the community? Aren't you a generous fellow!

As others have noted in this group, everything you need to build virtually any conceivable directory exists in contributed modules already. Learn how to use views and cck and you'll be most of the way there. After that, it's a matter of exploring fringe modules to match your particular need.

Actually, I've started to look for a professional Drupal developer to work on our project being paid for it and not doing this for free.

Our options are:
1. Develop something custom made
2. Develop something using Sobi2 and Joomla
3. Develop something using CCK, Views, ... with Drupal
4. Develop a new module such as Sobi2 for Drupal.

Reading through the posts in this group, I had the impression that there is a big interest in a new, easy to use module. Developing such a module on our own is probably more than we will be able to afford (our project is not-for profit), but if there are other developers who could help developing, or if there are people who could financially contribute so that we can pay someone to do it, we could go for option 4.

I've been struggling with building this on my site for the last 4 years. I keep running into various roadblocks in functionality and uncertainty of how best to organize things. It's not a simple problem and quite a bit of it is unique to each site. At one point I had intended to write a module for it but I think Features is a better direction for something like this. As mallory99 said, most/all the features exist, the problem is gluing it together and getting it all set up. You'd likely have a lot better luck focusing your efforts on the glue rather than re-inventing.
