For those of you who are agnostic about open source CMS or who sometimes find yourself needing a Joomla resource, you might be interested to know that a new PDX Joomla! user group has started. They have had one meeting and their next meeting is this month. Sadly, of all the days in the month they picked the exact same day of the month as the Drupal User group for their meetings. Poor form, but aside from that it now means that the big 4 open source CMS (Drupal, Wordpress, Plone and Joomla!) now all have PDX user groups.

Seems like a sensible way to do it actually. If you know what you're doing you go to drupal. If you want to use a blogging platform on steroids, you go to Joomla :)

I know you're kidding, but it is a point worth stressing. As a general rule tech groups in the same city try to avoid being on the same night as a similar tech group. PHP vs Python? No overlap? Not really, as we discovered when both user groups were meeting at the same time, so the PHP group changed nights. I certainly would like to go to both CMS UGs as my job requires me to be agnostic about such things, though clearly I have a personal preference for Drupal and we used it for our site. But the Joomla! group's scheduling has turned it into an either-or thing, which ain't cool and means I mostly have more use for Drupal UGs as the information is directly pertinent to my job.
I'm also in the same school of thought as Dries, namely that open source CMS are not competing with each other, but rather are all competing with the proprietary CMS that dominate the market, and that there is sooo much room for all of our OS CMS to grow.

Heh, ye my response was in Jest! It would be nice if they moved their date so as not to compete. This would accomodate everyone wanting to find reassurance in why they chose Drupal as their CMS of choice, or for those wanting to join us here on the dark side where we've got all those awesome evil powers to kick butt and take names :)
