Primary Topic/Presentation

As many of you may know, there has been a lot of work done recently (over the past year or more) on the Views UI by Acquia, and the work they have done for Drupal Gardens is now merged into the latest development snapshots for Views. And likely will be in a new alpha release by the time we actually hit this meetup.

This post from Earl (merlinofchaos) explains what has happened: http://www.angrydonuts.com/views-for-drupal-7-enters-a-new-era

I'd like to (and hopefully Michelle has some time to get up to speed on the changes as well) talk about this next month, as this IS the future of Drupal views, and it is now a HUGE step closer to becoming a candidate for Drupal core in the future (D8? D9?). This is hopefully going to make a large difference in the complexity some users face with Views for the first time.

I'd like to take this next meetup for say one hour, and discuss/demo/talk about this new views interface (for Drupal 7 of course) and then we can break it up and continue our usual pattern of late, and throw out and discuss any questions that need addressed by the group.

If you have any specific questions for the group, feel free to post them in reply to this thread, that way anyone with experience with the topic can have a little prep time to evaluate potential solutions.

Please make sure to use the "Sign Up" button for this event so that we may continue to know how many users will be in attendance. This is really important as the group grows so we know when we will have to look for a bigger location to hold us all!!

Dinner & Drinks

After each meetup, we depart from the "structured" environment, and continue our discussions over beers and/or food at Pochito's Mexican Restaurant, Murphy's Tap Room, or possibly the Strange Brew. We look forward to seeing you all there!!

Responsive Design

With all the work that Jake has done recently adding adaptive/responsive design to his Omega framework, I wonder if we could spend a little time hearing more about this (in general and Omega-specific). If there isn't time, maybe we could put it on the agenda for a future meeting. It sounds like a real boost to designers/developers.

I think that is a good idea,

I think that is a good idea, Jake could do a full day drupal camp on Omega with what he has done. I bet he would have a packed room!!!

In preparation for tonight...

We'll still try to do our "normal" method of "let's discuss anything", but I DO want to take a bit to go over (with Greg's help) the new Views UI.

For this segment, I've created a site at http://nh.developmentgeeks.com/

I'd like this one to be a bit of a follow along presentation rather than me just running through it. The test site has 3 or 4 content types, and 1500 nodes generated so that we can all create some views, and play around with the new interface.

If you get a chance before the meetup (and let's hope the wifi is working well tonight) please register an account on the site, and I'll grant you the appropriate role that will allow you to do some administration, create views, etc.

Otherwise, I'll setup everyone that is prepared to test it out at the beginning of the meetup.

:)

if there's time tonight...

...there is a question I'd like to get some feedback on.

A couple of months ago I was asking about the SimpleNews module, and the consensus was that it was a risky model to use because of the potential for getting the server blocked or being kicked off your hosting account.

So now I'm wondering about the Organic Groups and messaging modules, and if the same risks are inherent there.

I'm looking for a way for a non-profit site to be able to quickly communicate with it's constituency. People would sign up for a specific interest group or voter district group, and then, when a message or notice is posted to that group, all the members would be notified by email... just as we are here in this group.

So is there an overhead with the server--or worse--the risk of the server being blocked with that kind of activity? Or is it an entirely different kind of mechanism? Any suggestions on how to set this up would be appreciated.

Roger
