The United Nations Millennium Campaign, a global campaign to end extreme poverty by 2015, will relaunch their website on Drupal in the coming weeks and months. The campaign chose Drupal based on the software's flexibility, scalability, active user community, and proven track-record in managing large sites among other reasons. The Millennium Campaign will use the new platform to give greater content control to partner organizations and encourage online participation and contributions by individuals interested in holding their governments to account on implementation of the Millennium Development Goals. The United Nations Development Programme, which manages the Millennium Campaign, joins other UN Departments like the World Food Program in adopting the Drupal platform as a strategic campaign tool promoting activism.

The Goals and Campaign:

At the 2000 UN Millennium Summit, world leaders from rich and poor countries alike committed themselves--at the highest political level--to a set of eight time-bound targets that, when achieved, will end extreme poverty worldwide by 2015. Goals 1 through 7 commit them to raise the poor out of poverty and hunger, get every child into school, empower women, reduce child mortality, improve maternal health, combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases, and ensure environmental sustainability. Goal 8 explicitly recognizes that eradicating poverty worldwide can be achieved only through a global partnership for development.

In order to create momentum to achieve the goals, Sec. General Kofi Annan called for the creation of the Millennium Campaign in October of 2002. The Millennium Campaign informs, inspires and encourages people’s involvement and action for the realization of the Millennium Development Goals. The Campaign supports citizens’ efforts to hold their government to account for the Millennium promise.

We Need Your Help

The Millennium Campaign web team is working hard to launch a smaller site in support of the Stand Up Against Poverty, Guiness World Record attempt being held over Oct. 15 and 16 of this year. The larger campaign site will also be launched in the coming months. The campaign is committed to returning any improvements, documentation, and module development created in the course of launching the site to the Drupal community.

Please leave a comment below if you are interested in helping in any way, including, but not limited to: marketing, module development, testing, documentation and screencast creation, and translation and internationalization of the site.

Thank you to all of you for your continual work to improve Drupal and willingness to share this powerful platform Open Source. Your work will help the Millennium Campaign and many other organizations fight extreme poverty. This generation has the ability to end such poverty, and we need Drupal Power to do so.
