I have a new project that includes the need to present about 50 pages (currently in PDF format), as a online "flip book" format.
The product that I'm familiar with is MegaZine3, and I have been starting to explore the Pageflip drupal module that uses MegaZine3.
It's looking very complex, and some of the open issues are putting me off.
Does anyone have any experience with MegaZine3 to give me some confidence, or anyone have any alternatives they have used?

Treesaver
Have you looked at treesaver? There is a drupal module in the works (http://drupal.org/project/treesaver) but it is an open source javascript framework (http://treesaverjs.com/) that may not be exactly what you want but is a way forward for this sort of thing and is compatible across all devices. If you want to hear more about it there was recently an episode of "The Big Web Show" with a talk with the creators (http://5by5.tv/bigwebshow/42).
Hope that helps,
Luke

this is way cool
Luke thanks for flagging this one. If the drupal module makes it easy to configure, there are going to be SO MANY uses for this. Have you gotten it running on a drupal install yet?
Cheers

Page flip
Hey,
Did something similar recently using PageFlip - [http://pageflip.hu/pageflip3/help.html]
eg. http://ongas.co.nz/brochures/bottled-gas-supply-sept-2008
Didn't get a choice of product as it was already in use by the old WP site and they just wanted the same.
Anyways, it does degrade to show just the PDF if flash isn't available. :)
Just works off a content type which has a custom node template to display the flash content and calls back on itself to get the xml data.
eg. http://ongas.co.nz/brochures/bottled-gas-supply-sept-2008?pagedata=1
I'm sure you could do the same for other PageFlip alternatives and could sent you the node template if you're interested.

PageFlip
Thanks for comments. Following up those alternatives.
@8thom - if you could send me the that node template for pageflip3, that would be much appreciated - I'd like to learn more about how you did that. The example site you gave look very slick. Nicely integrated.

taking a step back...
Is looking at 50 PDF pages online really something a user does? I very much doubt it.
Having a PDF for download makes sense.
Allowing it to be previewed on the site can also make sense, particularly if it's larger - then the user can make sure it's what they want before downloading the whole thing.
Beyond that, I don't believe indulging a client like that ("want to present a 50 page PDF online") makes for a good user experience, and thus should be actively discouraged. You're the experts so it's an ideal moment to advise a client on that topic.
Starting from requirements elicitation and analysis...
Hi arjenlentz, I appreciate your feedback, and I appreciate your focus on challenging client's expectations.
In this particularly instance, through my workshopping with clients, and taking time to understand their business objectives, a mind-mapping and business process review, and the analysis that I'm currently doing - I feel that presenting this specific content online is very appropriate.
The content in question is a published bound booklet - an organisational history. The organisation sells the bound hardcopy document as a reference and keepsake. They have good sales when the booklet is sold in person, as potential customers can physically flip through the book and see the photos etc. Selling by mail order (email order) online has been challenging, as potential customers cant get a feel for the content. Some surveying of the customer base (small market survey...) shows customers much more likely to buy if they can see a visualization of the product. The intent is to show a low res (possibly black and white), rendition of the booklet online, and then give customers the opportunity to order the hardcoopy.
Hope that gives you some sense that I'm not just "indulging" a client :) But I do appreciate you making that point - after 15 years plus of IT Project Management and Business Analysis, I'm seen my fair share of "indulged" clients :)
An Alternative may be to use
An Alternative may be to use a module such as colorbox.
Its a gallery module
and only have the 1st Thumbnail displaying.
You would need to upload each page though.
Gallery Options...
Thanks Brett1,
That is a good alternative - I'll look at colorbox, and some other gallery options.
It's possible that something with a horizontal "slide" transition would be quite effective, and probably far easier to maintain (familiar content load process for users).
I'll ponder and research that for a couple of days.
Thanks!
Project Paroo: Presenting Photos and Graphics via Drupal
Hello
I am much interested in your discussion about managing and displaying photos. I have a client who is a major entertainment and recreation venue where we have set up Project Paroo for the following purposes
Paroo is part of a much bigger social media marketing project for this Client organisation. It is being scoped out now for Stage 1 to begin within weeks: using MySQL, Drupal 6 or 7, CiviCRM, appropriate 3rd party modules, and inevitably lots of PHP.
It is anticipated that the guest photo sub-module within Paroo, will contribute significantly to building a strong relationship between the venue and their day visitors, their corporate guests who come to major events conferences, dinners, etc, and customers for the major entertainment events that also happen at the same site. So the Client will consider pooling our time and $$$ investment in Paroo with other Australian organizations who have a similar general need, and relevant experience in managing and using a library of photos and graphics images, within a Drupal framework.
Please contact me if you are interested in some form of collaboration on our Project Paroo. We do not want to reinvent the wheel, but we are prepared to sharing resources to achieve the functionality we need in our larger social media marketing project.

issuu
hi, I've used issuu with success, you just upload the pdf to your issuu account then grab the embed code and drop it in a node with the input format set to full html
issuu look interesting
Thanks larowlan - had not seen issuu before - signed up and playing with that now... looks promising.
***Update: Larolan, this is great! easy to use, and fantastic presentation. #WIN! Thanks.
i don't know, what to do...:-(
hello op-ers,
i wanted to publish a magazine on my site. i've installed the pageflip module and megazine mz3v2. i created several pages, chapters and a book, made a menu-link, but nothing appears but the title of the book. also my site can't be scrolled no more, when i go to the magazine-link... :-( where is my fault? perhaps it is importent to know, that i am a beginner whit drupal and op...
thank you for all answers and help!
i wish a nice nikolaus- day (i am german and don't know the english word :-)) to all!
I reccommend Issuu
Hi Nicci,
After much struggling with Megazine - I eventually took Larolan's suggestion, and used Issuu. It was SO simple. Grab an account at Issuu.com and upload content - setup was very striaghtforward, and the presentation options are pretty flexible.
Then I just embedded the Issuu HTML code into the page content for display on the site.
Has been extremely reliable.
You can see it in action on one of my client sites here: http://blocmusictheatre.com.au/content/bloc-music-theatre-1959-2009-pict...
I would suggest the easiest option is the best option :)
THANK YOU!!!
hi mudsurfer,
thank you very much!! i spend a lot of time with trying pageflip-module, and now there is such an easy way...!
it is true: the easiest way is ever the best way - not in life, but in op :-))

nicci

Flipsnack
Another great alternative which works similar to isuu's upload-embed schema. :)
http://www.flipsnack.com/
Tried without success
Japo, I have uploaded one magazine to flipsnack but get "Unable to handle the provided embed string or URL." when tried to upload it into drupal. am using media selector. May you please be so kind to provide me with more info on how to do it.
I did copy from flipsnack then copied the url.
Pageflip module of drupal
Hi,
Thanks for quick reply. But how it integrate with drupal 7 to fliping page.
Thanks
It's pretty simple BN. - Just
It's pretty simple BN.
- Just sign up for an account in flipsnack or issuu,
- upload your PDF there,
- then get the embed code. (there should be instructions on the site)
Now on your drupal site,
- paste the embed code in your node.
- Make sure you're input format is Full HTML. :)
- save and enjoy.
swfobject.js
You will find that file here:
https://code.google.com/p/swfobject/
Alternatively you could download the MegaZine3 demo package: http://www.megazine3.de/tl_files/downloads/mz3v212/mz3_tool3.zip
Unzip it into a new folder and run it. Then you'll find the complete MegaZine3 software in the folder software/MZ3, which also contains the swfobject.js file in software/MZ3/js/
Thanks
Hi,
Ok. Thanks I will try it.
Best Regards

Hi, An Alternative
Hi,
An Alternative solution,
maybe you can use Kvisoft page flip software: http://www.kvisoft.com/flipbook-maker-pro/
It can help you convert PDF to page flip magazine without any program skills. Hope this helps!
