South Melbourne Informal Night #2

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Start:
2006-10-10 18:30 Australia/Melbourne

Well, the first one was such a success, and I received a few requests to do it again. One suggestion was to go for the 2nd Tuesday of each month.... so, let's give it a go and hope for an equally good turnout at the second informal Drupal get-together on Tuesday, 10 October 2006 from 6:30PM until 9:30PM.

Venue: Railway Pub, South Melbourne, corner of Ferrars and Bank Streets. (here's a map)

We'll be in the "back room" at the pub. Just ask anyone at the bar and they'll point you there. Tuesday night is "chef's special" night so there's usually a good $12 chef's special, and the rest of the menu is really good. Free WiFi, so bring your laptops if you want.

Also, it might be good if anybody has any "things to show". The last time, there was a lot of interest in seeing some of the work people were doing in Drupal. So, if you have a site you're working on, or some cool tools you find useful, bring along some bookmarks.

We had another great informal night at the Railway pub last Tuesday. If you missed it, here is a brief re-cap.

There were about 10 or 11 people that rolled up, with about half that attended last month's informal night and half were new faces. It was a fun night with lots of laughs and it seems like we should make this a regular monthly gathering.

Several discussions picked up right away as general catch-ups, with lively tech talk at the "deep end" of the table. We were fortunate to have some experienced core developers attend to give their perspective on Drupal architecture questions for us newbies. There were some "What if" questions tossed around like turning users into nodes, what's new in version 5, and suggestions for taking advantage of the powerful CCK.

Once the important business of having dinner was over the laptops came out. After a brief show-and-tell, the main demo of the night began.

As sime (Thanks Simon!) posted some links about already, we had a demo of new features under development for the Ecommerce modules. These will be ideal for sites that have a requirement for recurring, subscription-based transactions. Sammys came to Melbourne from Sydney to give us an overview of progress. The modules allow for the setup of any number of automatic email notices to users for subscriptions that are due to or already expired, plus they manage the access levels. Another feature is the ability for users to purchase the subscription anonymously, with the user account being created as part of the purchase transaction. See sime's list of links and documentation comment for more info on recurring ecommerce transactions. Many thanks to all the ecommerce maintainers for the great demo and all that hard work!

By this time we were about the only ones left in the pub, but still had a hard time wrapping up the Drupal conversations. Thanks again to everyone that made the night so enjoyable.

Hope to see you next time.
