Hellooo from the Szeged Drupalcon 2008,
The next drupalcon will probably be in north america, but the one after that - probably in spring/summer of 2009 - is looking for a quality home....
According to the opening keynote speech from Drupal project leader Dries today, the Turkish Drupal community is probably the second fastest growing drupal community.
The last Turkish drupal event attempt was not so succesful, but with the growing Turkish participation, what do you think of proposing Istanbul as the next Drupalcon event? Would you attend? Can you think of a better city?

I don't know how Dries
I don't know how Dries reached to that conclusion about Turkish community being the second fastest growing drupal community. The truth is we have very few Turkish contributors here on d.o and probably no professional design firms creating drupal based sites. When i heard about the drupalcon at Szeged, i didn't understand why they were going to host it there but now i know that 10 percent of the users on d.o are from Hungary. We're not any near that statistic, probably less than %1. Under these circumstances, it would be very optimistic to hope that we can host a drupalcon in Turkey in the near future.

That is good news
The Turkey group needs to meet somehow somewhere. Why not İstanbul? That will be very valuable for us and as well as for Turkey. I will try to be there.
This is not about a local
This is not about a local meeting for Turkish Drupal users. Drupalcon brings drupal users together from all around the world. We need to have something to offer to organize such an important conference in Turkey. I mean there should be several experienced Turkish Drupal users and module contributors who will make presentations in English. I know, i sound very pessimistic but this it the reality.

Thanks misty for this news. I'll get in touch with Dries and start talking about this possibility. He wouldn't make such a statement without some hard data and I'd like to learn what that is.
2009 may be too soon since Turkish Drupal Community is in growing pains and kind of fractured. Istanbul will be the European Capital of Culture during 2010. That may also encourage people to attend. We may also offer a seaside location having great 5 star beach hotels with cheap prices in May and September.
I'd like to know you better also. Where are you from, where do you live, how did you learn Turkish? Thanks for your interest in this group.
I'm coming!
I'm all for it, and you can count on me for advocating the idea in the Israeli community.
While you can question Turkey being part of the European community or not, you can't question the fact that Istanbul can be an amazing destination for the next European Drupalcon (never been there, but I'd love to come)
Count me in!!!
I started getting excited
Z. thanks for the support. I was going to wait until Drupalcon is over to contact Dries but may be I should do it now. Do you know when and how the future Drupalcon locations are determined? I mean will there be a discussion about this at Szeged?
UPDATE: It seems like you apply to the Drupal association:

Yep
thanks Zohar!
For now this is the start of an idea. We are a LONG way off from confirming this of course.
I posted the note for a couple of reasons
pembeci, there definately is a formal process to go through, and it is still early days. I imagine it requires quite a few people thinking this is a good idea AND - more importantly - being prepared to put in the massive effort to organise a drupalcon. This is a big challenge and not to be taken lightly.
But just imagine doing a drupalcon presentation on a boat on the Bosphorous! Woo hoo!
1: 'next European drupalcon' is a loose term, and should probably be the 'next non US drupalcon' as it tends to swap back and forth. It could be Shanghai..
I'm in a different city, but
I'm in a different city, but I won't miss such an opportunity if it happens.
