I'm working on creating a gallery site to get my paintings back online, and I'm playing with methods of creating galleries from nodes with images, descriptions, and data about each painting.
So I want to create a view that pulls thumbnails from each painting content-type page, but the gallery views would be broken out by category (Portrait, Landscape, Still-Life, etc.).
So here's my question... In the Painting Page content-type would I add a text field with a select list of the categories, or make a Taxonomy of the categories and associate THAT with the content-type?
When it comes down to it... what's the difference--since you can easily make a custom field with the defined list or terms. Why use Taxonomy?

I would go with Taxonomy, I think you will have more flexability with it. Have you checked out the media gallery module http://drupal.org/project/media_gallery it works with the media module http://drupal.org/project/media. I've played with the media module a little can't wait to use it in a real site!!

Media Gallery
I'm just playing with the Media Gallery module now. It's coming close to what I'm looking for, but there are a few things that I'm still not wild about. primarily I'd like to have a way that I can use my own custom content type as the source for the gallery images, so that I have complete control over how the content is stored, displayed, and manipulated (with Views, etc.).
The Media Gallery module uses nodes that are controlled/managed by the Media module and--so far--I'm not finding I have as much controls over how I can customize those nodes. I can't even specify where the image files are stored. They all just get dumped into the directory I've designated with media/file-system. Not a deal-killer, but with a lot of images in a number of categories, it's less than ideal for file management (I'm kind of a neat freak).
I'll keep at it and letcha know what I come up with.
