If I'm not mistaken,
If I'm not mistaken, groups.drupal.org uses Mollom service. This anti-spam module saves your ip address and once your content has been considered as ham, no captcha challenge is fired, as long as it comes from the same ip, but once it language algorithm senses something wrong, then the challenge is fired.

Oh I see. Thanks for the info. One more Q though, wouldn't it be more appropriate if Mollom or its captcha fires up right along with the entry form and not after form submission? Saves one or two steps.

I understand it now ... Mollom analyzes the post and poses or not the challenge based on its analysis. Still I'm digging the reason why it posed the challenge to the post above ... perhaps even to this one ... let's see ...
