Business of Drupal: Welcome Note

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

[Edit: this group is being merged with consulting, to cover businesses being run on Drupal, as the needs and discussion have very close overlap]

This group is designed to help people who are reliant on Drupal for their business.
Ideas for topics:

Starting up a new business
Joint Ventures / Partnerships
Supplier discussions - Good / Bad / Cheap / Reliable ?
Funding a company / Looking for Venture Capital
Operational issues for businesses
Financial and commerial issues for business
Co-operative Marketing & or advertising
Exchange of Services or facilites e.g. I can give you hosting if you can do some coding
Strategies for approaching different business issues such as negoations

Basically anything that is going to help your business or someone else's business become more profitable.

It is not the purpose of this group to discuss technical issues unless they have a direct commercial or operational impact and when this does occur we should debate the impacts and potential solutions rather than the technical.

Welcome everyone and I look forward to our future discussions.

not happy

this welcome note sounds to me like the business of business, not the business of drupal. it simply isn't drupal specific. this group is likely to be deleted soon.

A bit lost by your statement

The busines of Drupal is the same as any other business with the exception that the people involved are directly dependant on Drupal for there livelhood. In order for Drupal to be successful the companies / organisations / people have to be successful.

Lets be clear about what you think that drupal should not support:

Starting up a new business
- Anyone thinking of setting up a drupal development house will hit loads of issues that others have already resolved

Joint Ventures / Partnerships
- A drupal coder and a themer agreeing to work together

Supplier discussions - Good / Bad / Cheap / Reliable ?
- Which hosting company does a developer use when they have just won a contract for a site that gets 2,000,000 hits a month.

Funding a company / Looking for Venture Capital
- See item one, does the developer get a bank loan or go to a business angel to fund their first premises?

Operational issues for businesses
- What happens when a 1 man drupal house needs to expand, how do they deal with all of a sudden having to deal with employment laws in the UK if they are based in a non-european country

Financial and commerial issues for business
- Does a Drupal developer from the States charge tax when invoicing to the UK. This came up yesterday for me when I agreed to sponsor the rest of Derek's project.

Co-operative Marketing & or advertising
- Lullabot and Bryght agree to run a campaign together promoting a drupal event or service

Exchange of Services or facilites e.g. I can give you hosting if you can do some coding
- As it says

Strategies for approaching different business issues such as negoations
- How does a Drupal developer get a decent rate for his work.
- Is the release cycle for Drupal to agressive to attract large corporates and how do you deal with this objection from a large client

I am trying to help move Drupal forward, if you do not believe that their should be support for the commercial viability of the organisations that depend on Drupal for a living, I am afraid I believe your view to be nieve and one that will stiffle the growth of Drupal and goes against all the efforts that are being made by everyone who is trying to promote drupal.

Drupal is getting bigger and cannot depend on Developers alone, my business and many others have made a huge investment in commiting to Drupal and not only need it to be around for a long time but need to see improved acceptance in the marketplace. This only comes when Drupal is represented by companies that come across as professional with capable support structures and there are an acceptable range of available commercial services.

What is groups.drupal.org a playground for developers or somewhere that groups of people who depend on Drupal come together to help each other in areas of shared interests. If this does not belong on here then where?

I also don't understand the position of this guy

I also don't understand the position of this guy.
This is the Drupal official statement, principle or aim?
i.e. I have a Dedicated Webserver for all that request space for a Drupal project.
these guys said that the space of Drupal is the HIDE A PROJECT or some similar.
meanwhile this section of groups is like a cemetery...
and you have to find interesting things out - of the closed drupal website - to some neighbourds.

Groups.drupal.org facilitates collaboration for collections of Drupal fans everywhere.

So...is "business" a valid topic?

There is a slippery slope here - if we allow discussion of business, then why not allow people to engage in multi-level-marketing schemes? How far off-topic of Drupal can one venture before we decide it's too far?

As long as discussion stays closely tied to Drupal businesses, great. But we already have other groups that talk about that - so how is this group different?

Perhaps the "cemetery" effect you describe is the result of too many groups instead of focusing the related content into a smaller number of core groups.

I suggested merging

Boris Mann's picture

I left this group in moderation and suggested merging it with the http://groups.drupal.org/consulting group.

Fintang -- can we merge? i.e. we delete this group and move the subscribers to consulting -- I emailed you about this and got no response.

I made a post in the maintenace group about this (http://groups.drupal.org/node/1628)
