Is there life in a Providence meet up?

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

I drove to my first non-lullabot/non-drupalcon meetup in Boston last week. It was great to see all the good work people have been doing with Drupal. However, I'd like to cut my commute down from Boston to Providence. I'm located in Fall River and would even be interested in starting a South Coast chapter if no one is interested in the Providence area.

If so, let's start talking about ideas, venues and dates. I don't have any good connections (like a university) in Providence to reserve - but could potentially book something at Bristol Community College in Fall River or Umass Dartmouth, in Dartmouth.

Strike it up - who's interested?

I've been working on it...

I have been actively trying to find a venue, and it's proving difficult. Basically, every venue after 5:00 is closed.

I have permission to use my office, however, the front door, stair door and elevator are locked after 5:00, meaning someone would have to go down and let every one in every time someone arrived - that seems too prohibitive because people should be free to come and go as they wish. The other places I have looked at require that someone of the organization stay around, and no one wants to stay around that late.

I have also considered using my apartment - it is large enough to accommodate around 8 or so people. That would require for me to keep it clean :)

Lots of other meet up groups use restaurants and stuff, but it gets hairy amidst all the crowds.

I'm in.

I'd be into this. Finding a venue is the easy part. I could get something together quick.

The big question right now is, who's interested? Once we have a general scope of how many people might be interested (3? or 23?), we can do a better job of finding a venue.

I'd be interested. I currently organize another Drupal Group (http://groups.drupal.org/western-massachusetts), as I am back and forth between Newport, RI and Amherst, MA - but the more Drupal the better!

PS: Hi Jeff!

Here is a tally I have 3

Anyone have any other community sites we may be able to advertise the meetup on?

looks good - I saw a PHP based group that was posted in a previous attempt to spark the PRV meeting. Maybe we can hit those once we get more feedback from this drupal base.

I'll be there, schedule permitting

I'm an hour and a half southeast, near New Haven.

November's looking good for me (after the election and before the holiday week). When are we talking about?

I'm thinking November too -

I'm thinking November too - before the holidays works.

Should we have a cutoff date

mattmm's picture

Should we have a cutoff date by the end (or close to) of October to select a date in November?

2 weeks notice

ceardach's picture

I think there should be two weeks notice before a meet up date.

However, I do believe the first restriction for any meet up is the location we would meet at.

jjeff said he can secure a

mattmm's picture

jjeff said he can secure a venue depending on the number of attendees. I'm thinking if we can secure that number, that gives jjeff the jump start on venue - if November works for him.

I'm guessing that we'll get

jjeff's picture

I'm guessing that we'll get between 5 and 20 people. And since this is (sort of) the first Providence Drupal meetup, it might be best that we keep this more social than giving-presentations-in-a-quiet-room oriented. So to that end, I propose that we meet upstairs at The Red Fez (a bar/restaurant @ 49 Peck St), on Wednesday, November 12th from 6:30 - 9:00pm.

How does that sound?

There's a good chance I

There's a good chance I can't make it the 12th (I'll confirm this evening). Every other Tue/Wed I am unavailable. Is this a firm date, or flexible?

Providence Group

Glad to see a Providence meetup finally taking off! Too bad I'm no longer in the area.

Would any of you be interested in being made an admin for the group? I know there is a lot more that can be done with this groups page.

Let me know via my contact form if interested.
