I'm trying to embed a YouTube video into this page.
Using standard YouTube tags, I get blank spaces.
Any advice on how to make it work?

input filters
YouTube videos (like most videos) require use of object, embed, and/or script tags.
All of these tags are very unsafe to allow for unknown users.
In Drupal, you can work with this by using the Embedded Media Field module, or by setting an input filter that allows these tags only for very trusted users.

The page format I'm using is only editable by the creator - me.
The embed script provided by YouTube does not seem to work.
Is that a function of my own permissions - or lack thereof?

When you say "page format" what do you mean?
This does sound like a permissions issue.
Screenshots of the page where you are attempting to enter content would also be helpful.

Probably a formatting issue
Hopefully you've solved this by now, but if someone comes upon this and wants the answer, it is most likely a Input Format problem — pick Full HTML or PHP instead of filtered HTML and that will probably do the trick.
