The theme developer that I use has posted a new Drupal theme that is set up to display a directory structure. You can see it here:
http://www.themeshark.com/demo/westcoast/
It is pretty sparsely populated, but for example you can search in "Cars >> Cars and Trucks" or "Buy and Sell >> Electronics". It apparently just uses standard modules (e.g., Views, Taxonomy). I downloaded it (as a customer), but have not looked into the details yet. At least it shows some things that can be done, however.

Nice!
Ok, this is a lame comment because I don't know what to put beyond "Nice!" LOL! Don't mean to sound like one of those comment spammers. ;) But, really, very nice looking.

This is a really awesome
This is a really awesome looking directory. What theme did you start with? Any sort of run-down of the various modules and customizations used?
Nice
How can I do it in my site? Would You like to describe how ...
Very nice!
That's a good looking directory. I'd love to hear more about the approach. Did you use particular modules or features? Did you just create a content type and then theme it out? Inquiring minds would like to know!
+1
I'm on the hunt for this functionality too - please do share :)
What themes and modules did you use please?
it costs $70
What the poster did not say, is that this is a paid for theme, $70

New URL
Yes, as webengr said, this is a paid-for theme. I have been a customer in the past for other themes, but that is my only affiliation to them. As an FYI, it looks like they have redesigned their website, so the new URL for this directory theme is:
http://preview.neptunethemes.com/preview?theme=westcoast
Cost is $45 as of 1/15/2015, for Drupal 7.
