I will be hosting an auction site which will get quite a bit of traffic (expected 2000 viewers) on the day of every auction. Most of the time it will be quite a low traffic. What hosting would I need to accommodate this? What steps should I take to optimize performance. I've looked at media temple, mosso, slicehost and a few others.
Should I go for a cluster, vps or dedicated server.

Thanks.

"2000" viewers - isn't enough to discover your needs.

you need to know:

  • most visited pages on your site
  • memory/CPU/IO needed to generate this pages
  • type of content (dynamic or static for anonymous or authorized user)

after this you will know:

1. what offers you need to review

  • vps, dedicated server or cluster.
  • by traffic (predefined or unlimited)
  • by network speed (may be you need to look for CDN)

2. how to organize your site

  • do you need pregeneted content?
  • cache (memcached, APC)
  • optimization (Zend Optimizer, eAccelerator)
  • do you need to devide static content and dynamic between two web servers?
  • do you need database cluster?

May be you need mixture of suggestions, but before to take decision you need to know (exactly if it is possible) what you have (as requirements)

When I don't know what to expect - I see for offers which allow low cost upgrade

High performance
