How oftan should we have meetings that you would want to attend?

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Meeting notifications

greg_albright's picture

Just to make note of the recent email asking about receipt of meeting notifications and simply receiving the threads from other members. I made no changes in my settings since I became a member. I was receiving all the threads and notifications since I became a member - until recently. I've realized I've received no notifications, or threads since November 3rd! I checked my settings, and they are all set to a mysterious setting of the default - "0." Why or how this happened remains a mystery.

New Subscription Options

eric.web's picture

I am not sure if I incorrect or not but I recently noticed that there are "Subscriptions" icons for every post now at groups.drupal.org/indiana. I am not sure if some one in our group updated the subscription module or if this was a site wide kind of change. However, I suspect that due to the updated subscription module on the site, our previous notification settings were reset to not receive any notifications from the group.

I guess it might be a catch 22 if those who don't know that they are not getting notifications won't know they are not getting notifications. So please, if you communicate to a group member outside of our regular meetings let them know that they will need to update their subscription settings.

no catch22 at all

Eric, I see your point, but I have used multiple methods to contact everyone who has ever attended a physical meeting in the year of 2008.
By now, every one know whether or not they are receiving notifications.
A while back one of our guys mentioned putting on a Drupalcamp in Indy. Further back then that we discussed working on drupalindy.com as a group.
As it stands now we don't have the manpower or the apparent interest to take on activities of that magnitude.
Last night we had two new attendees who were asking what the group is all about and what my agenda was for the group. I told them that the group is not my group and that I have tried having agendas in the past, but that I am more interested in what the group wants for the group. I don't believe in dictatorships.
I had to explain that to one new person that the groups.drupal.org posts are 80% mine 15% Aaron's and the remaining 5% is divided by the occasional post of someone else.
We're entering a new year and I would love to pick up some more sponsors and do some more activities. I appreciate that we're not all as gaga for Drupal as I am. I appreciate that people have other things to do. But I simply don't see how 2009 can be worth the effort unless more people step up and help out with promotion, content, conversation, etc.
This is not my group. This is your group. It won't be anyone's group if it keeps going the way its going.

Don't give up

dudenhofer's picture

I think maintaining a positive attitude is the best thing we can do.

Our group isn't going nowhere, we've had new people at the last 3 meetups straight. That's growth. I think people should be able to contribute at their own pace, and if we aren't ready for that level of promotion or activity, let's just accept it and move on. Don't get discouraged. The group will come together in time.

We're a fresh group. We're not going to just jump to the level of activity as some of the others. We're trying, though, and that's what matters. We're making an impression. New people are hearing about us and getting involved.

I think it's great. I, personally, think this is 'worth the effort' and don't appreciate posts that assume otherwise. But I can also appreciate that this is open source and everyone's entitled to their opinion.

I think positive attitudes generate positive activity.

I to agree that there is growth in the group, and I think we could pull some of these things off. By ourselves no, with the Drupal community yes. Chicago has offered to help with a DrupalCamp if we wanted to try that. I think the big thing in open source communities is you have to understand that everyone comes from so many different backgrounds, that you can't just focus on one thing and hope for the group to maintain the same attendance. Maybe we have a beginner's meeting and an advanced meeting. But anyway, I don't think it's time to abandon ship. We need to buckle down and hang in there.

Setting up a committee?

hoosierlacrosse's picture

What do you guys think about setting up a committee? They would help facilitate future meetings and the direction of the group by setting up agendas and goals. I am not for having a single person that calls the shots but we do need a person or a group of people to take the bull by the horns. I am one of the newbies but would volunteer to be involved if this is the direction the group wants to go in.

I really enjoyed meeting everyone and would love for this group to thrive!

Thanks for the Pizza Doug!

Agree with dudenhofer on this one

I know I couldn't make it in the last month or so to any meetings due to other planned family activities, but believe me, I'd love to make any and all meetings where possible. I agree that the group will come together in time.

I do think it would be nice to have a project like drupalindy.com to work on and learn with, but I know my time is limited right now like everyone else. I'd recommend making this a subject of one of the meetings, so we can make some progress with drupalindy.com and maybe each make commitments (as we are able) to working on a particular aspect of the site in groups. The previous discussions probably happened before I joined up though, so not sure where we are with drupalindy.com

A long-term project that I'd like to do is to work with group members to design a site pro bono for a non-profit, like what happened in Chicago. Not sure if that is feasible, but that's where my interests are and how I like to learn by doing.

Currently, Doug is definitely driving this car. I hope that we'll all step up and take the wheel every once in a while so he can play with the radio.
