Congratulations to Bdragon, Bec, and all the volunteer contributors who helped push out the new, officially-supported releases of the Location (v3) and Gmap (v1) modules. Hundreds of hours of work have gone into these modules since we adopted them, and we're very proud of the new and refined features.
Location and Gmap can be combined to associate physical, real-world locations with Drupal nodes and users, as well as displaying interactive maps of that content.
We encourage everyone using previously-released versions of these modules to upgrade. If you've been waiting patiently for the new modules, check them out today -- versions are available for both Drupal 5 and Drupal 6.
We'd also like to encourage all Drupal GIS and mapping enthusiasts to vote for our proposed session for Drupalcon DC: Drupal as a GeoCMS. As we look toward 2009 and beyond, we have a lot of great momentum and opportunities, including the upcoming transition from Location to Geo and a host of easy-to-use mapping-mashup tools. In the meantime, we welcome input -- feature suggestions, patches, bug reports, complaints, etc. -- from the whole community!

That sounds great...just what I needed! I went to the project pages and I don't see anywhere to download the "official release" just the rc's. Any news when we can get the files?
thanks
Sorry - they're up now!
I had an itchy "submit" finger and my post beat Bec's final release posting :) Check back now, they're all up on the proper pages!

Drupal is rounding the turns quickly to be a top contender in the GeoCMS social platform space. Congrats~! The Views updates are huge and will open new doors for the point and click development of digital maps and GIS.
