Full Description for Hesketh Presentation

Here's the complete description of what the folks from Hesketh will be presenting tomorrow.

Adding to Your Toolbox:
Creating Drupal Sites that Meet Organizational Objectives

With nearly 9,000 modules, you can do almost anything with a Drupal site. But how do you know what you should do? And maybe an even more daunting question, how do you get others to agree with you about what should be done? Heather Hesketh and Alice Williams of hesketh.com delve into a recent client case study to examine these questions. Together, Heather and Alice share decades of experience working with and in the non-profit sector, an arena frequently driven by committee-based decision making (aka the dreaded momentum killer). They will discuss the importance of research, clear communication, and a unifying vision for building buy-in & overcoming individual objections for the good of the organization.

Sorry this was delayed because I'm just getting caught up from a trip to visit family in Colorado last week....

NTEN Drupal community of practice

Folks attending the meeting tonight might be interested to know that there is an active NTEN community of practice for Drupal and nonprofits -- http://groups.nten.org/group.htm?mode=home&igid=90979. Here are two posts about the group. -- Judy

Subject: [NTEN-Drupal] Let's Get It Started...(notes from our meeting on 10/5)

Following are my notes from our meeting of 10/5 as well as action items from that meeting. Given that we are not a governing body, these are more notes than minutes to make them more readable on a monthly basis.

NTEN-Drupal Community of Practice Monthly Meeting
Subject: CoP Kickoff - Discussion of what we want
Date: 10/5/2011
Time: 12:00PM

Following are the key points from the discussion...
Group participants, at least on the phone, were service providers / consultants

A variety of topics and modes of discussion (panel, open forum, webinar) would keep things fresh. Perhaps a rotation of webinar and round table discussion re: best practices would be a good way to go

Two primary purposes for the group were proposed: education of group members and advocacy on behalf of non-profit organizations in the larger technology world, e.g. "Hey Democracy in Action, how about showing some love to Drupal?"

In general, the entire Drupal stack from installation/configuration through theming to module development were topics participants had an interest in. Specific topics included:

* Organic Groups
* Panels
* Features
* CRM - CiviCRM, Salesforce, etc.
* Drupal 6 vs. Drupal 7
* Drupal 7 Best Practices / Gotchas
* Multi-Site - Aegir, Size, Budget, etc.
* Single Sign-on Multi-Site
* Budget Sinkholes (and how to avoid them)
* Drupal Contracting Best Practices / "When it's ok to say 'No'"
* Social Media Integration

The group concluded with a discussion of the NTC "Unconference" Track and how we can include Drupal breakouts.

Following were the action items coming out of the call:

* Send recording of meeting and follow-up notes (Complete as of this message)
* Set agenda for three months and schedule monthly call - Neil Giarratana
* Poll interest in advocacy plan for NTEN-Drupal - Sarah Janczak/Neil Giarratana
* Discuss advocacy plan - Neil Giarratana / Gregory Heller

Subject: [NTEN-Drupal] Draft Monthly Schedule...

Hello everyone.
Here is the draft meeting schedule for the next 12 months. In general, the meetings are the first Wednesday of the month at 12pm Eastern. The exceptions are December (conflict for use of ReadyTalk) and July (Independence Day). In addition, the April meeting will be in-person and, hopefully, online at the same time at NTC. We'll have more details about that as they become available.

In terms of format, I've tried to rotate between webinar, case study sharing and roundtable formats each month. Please note that the only topic in stone is the first one (just because we need to have something for November). If you have thoughts / ideas for replacing topic sessions, now's your chance. The only one that occurred to me after our phone meeting but wasn't on the list was a webinar on drush. If you're in any way comfortable with a command line, drush allows you to do everything from installing Drupal to transfering Drupal sites between servers to downloading modules all in a single command. Let me know if there's interest and I may add a bonus session.

If you know someone who would be interested to lead one of the webinars (~45 minute preso) or want to volunteer to share a case study (~15 minutes each), please let me know. I'm hoping to reach out to Drupal community members known for some of the topics to see if we can get guest appearances.

* Nov 2 - (Easily) Creating Reusable Drupal Features - Neil Giarratana (webinar)
* Dec 14 - Drupal 7, When to make the "switch" (and what to watch out for) - (case studies)
* Jan 4 - When it's ok to say No (roundtable)
* Feb 1 - Panels, Pages & Context - TBD (webinar)
* Mar 7 - Theming Tips & Tricks - (case studies)
* Apr 4 - (Drupal) Best Practices for Empowering Non-Profits (live roundtable at NTC? + online)
* May 2 - Organic Groups - TBD (webinar)
* Jun 6 - Multisite Drupal Implementations - TBD (case studies)
* Jul 11* - Drupal Project Management Best Practice (roundtable)
* Aug 1 - Writing Drupal Modules - TBD (webinar)
* Sept 5 - Drupal CRM Options - TBD (case studies)
* Oct 3 - Planning for 2012 (roundtable)

* July is moved to the 11th due to Independence Day.
