Questions! Forums in drupal? Anonymous comments by content type?

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Allright everyone, two areas I'd like some input on!

First: Forums

What do you use for forums on your own drupal sites? I've wanted to avoid going the forum route to gain additional repeat visitation but it's become nescessary. The one built into drupal is extremely lack luster. What is the easiest and most functional when integrated in your experience?

Second: Anonymous Comments by content type?

If I am stuck using the built in one, is there a way to only allow comments by content type? For example, I want anonymous users to be able to leave comments about stores, however I don't want anonymous users to be able to jump in the forums. Forums are bad enough already for people talking trash!

Hi, I've used

Hi,

I've used taxonomy_access module for forums before. There are some other options listed on this project page:
http://drupal.org/project/ACL

Regarding Drupal forum module vs external tools, I haven't tried any of them. I ran a phpBB board a long time ago, but never tried to integrate it with Drupal. I'm not trying to tell you Drupal is the "one true way", I just don't have experience with the 3rd-party forum modules.

If you post specific features you'd like your forum to have, folks might have suggestions on how you can implement in Drupal.

Hi Jesse - Drupal forums out

Hi Jesse - Drupal forums out of the box is really quite nice because it is so simple:

You have Forum Containers -> You start a Thread in the container -> People Reply

I know there are some major draw backs here as well - especially when compared to a phpBB. So the best thing is to make a list of what you want then try to find modules for it.

This Kat put together a good list of Forum Modules that can help your forum:

You can do some simple theming and make your Posts look pretty decent -> check out this one I did for Def Jux:

Clean and simple -> using php_template as theme override for Forum Nodes

You always come up with something good - keep me posted.

WOW! You've done some really

WOW! You've done some really impressive work with the Def Jux site. Congratulations! Your firm is pretty slick bud!

Can you explain a bit more about how you used php_template as theme override for the forum nodes? Perhaps a link to a few articles would be nice. I'm loving what you've done, and if I could get myself going in that direction I'd be well off. Perhaps I could get you to email the file as well? Reverse engineering code works wonders for me!

So far I've been doing everything using CSS style overrides, which works, but it's damn tiresome at times.

drupal only

bara.munchies's picture

for me the best way is to create a forum with drupal only. i do not use the forum core module, instead i create a content type and list the forums with views. i like the vanilla concept of a forum, and this can be done in the way i described it in less than a day (depends what extras you want).
but to be honest, i just started with forums. word is that the admin backend for a drupal forum is very simple and users of foum only software might use a lot. of course, naothing that can't be done with drupal. but it seems not to be out of the box.

can any one help me out??

Hi,

Does anybody knows how to:

Disable comment to any ANONYMOUS USER for ALL NODES

but

Enable at the same time comment to ANONYMOUS USER for some SELECTED NODES (I want to decide during the page creation if anonymous users will be allowed to comment this one or not)

Thank you for your help.

If, as your subject suggests,

If, as your subject suggests, most of your issues are in Forums, then you might want to look into the Forum Access module.
