DrupalCamp Singapore - inviting a speaker from overseas - post your candidates here

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.
svenryen's picture

As you may have noticed, Singapore was granted money for Community Cultivation by the Drupal Association so that we can bring in an international speaker to our DrupalCamp.

Is there anybody you would like to invite?
The funds should be sufficient to bring in somebody from Europe and maybe somebody from the States if we use sponsor money to top up.

Please post your suggestion as a comment, and also - when you post,
1) include the name of the proposed guest
2) write a short explanation why you think we should invite this person
3) what you think are the benefits for the drupal community in singapore / South/SE Asia

Alternately, add to the discussion that you second one of the proposed candidates.

Note that I'm including some groups in the region besides Singapore - there might be funds available for a stopover somewhere else in Asia, so I also encourage members from nearby countries to suggest candidates for the overseas speaker.

John Albin Wilkins (http://drupal.org/user/32095, https://plus.google.com/103909033183951641598/posts), Drupal front-end evangelist, authour of several Drupal books, presenter at many Drupal events including the last DrupalCon in London and resident of Taipei, Taiwan. He's a great presenter and he's close so travel will be cheap :)

+1 for John Albin Wilkins for

+1 for John Albin Wilkins for the reasons already given. Personally, I think someone focused on the front end would be most valuable for this kind of event. Can't think of anyone better to speak on that topic.

Robert Douglas?

jchin1968's picture

What about Robert Douglas? I spoke with him recently at DrupalCon London and he expressed interest in coming to SE Asia to promote Drupal, especially at the enterprise level. He's also quite active in the Drupal community as you can see from his profile, http://drupal.org/user/5449.

someone who is already familiar with Asia

marcrobinsone's picture

Hey guys,

I vote for Jacob Redding (Drupal Association), mainly because he's already immersed in our culture (and has lived in several Asian countries).

Otherwise, I'd go for the next best person of interest who can help us promote Drupal in Asia.

--- Marc C.

He was not able to come

svenryen's picture

Jacob Redding just responded that he's unable to attend in December and it's too early for him to say anything about March. (January wasn't well received in the vote so it's been removed as an alternative) Also, since he's in fact in the board that awarded us the grant, he can't accept support to travel.

Good news is that Robert Douglass is available, and it's not a conflict to use the grant for his expenses.

I'm still waiting to hear back from John Wilkins. He might be travelling at the moment.

FAQ

dozymoe's picture

From what I've seen so far on IRC, the most asked Q is:

  • multisite and/or multilingual
  • token (with mail message and/or delivery)
  • gmap/location
  • commerce
  • backup and migrate, staging in development/collaboration (git?), move from local to server
  • site structure (directory permission)
  • upgrade theme/modules/site

I would like to see Robert

m_wiking's picture

I would like to see Robert Douglas since he has focus on search, which is very general area and very important for sites today. It could be interesting for a lot of different categories of people to listen to him. I have seen him and he's a good speaker.

I would also be interested in web services and using Drupal as a backend for a mobile application.

John Albin Wilkins sounds like interesting presenter for people who are in to front end.

re: updates

marcrobinsone's picture

I see. Thanks for confirming this with Jacob. Since he's a no-go (plus it might be a conflict-of-interest) then it makes sense to root for our next options.

I wish John Albin or Robert Douglas can spend time to travel to Asia, but I'm aware they're both busy with their Drupal 8 initiative tasks. Hopefully we'll hear they're interested too :-)

He's in Asia

@marcrobinsone

John Albin lives in Taipei, Taiwan - he spends lots of time in Asia :)

Hi Wang, I think it's good if you could also tell us what's good for inviting Rob Loach. Benefits should be for the whole community or at least for the majority.

Robloach is a D7 & D8 core

skyredwang's picture

Robloach is a D7 & D8 core contributor; and about third party modules contribution, I invite you all to visit his profile page, under Project commits, you will be amazed. One more person to add: Catch http://drupal.org/user/35733 , he is also D7 & D8 core contributor, and he lives in Japan. Let me know what other questions people have.

cool

Have you considered inviting Dries? He's speaking at the Australian conference in January, maybe he would want to go to yours as well.

Sounds like a good conference. I'm from Australia and I would like to come. Maybe I will run some training while I'm there. In Melbourne I run a web development training company called IWDA (International Web Development Academy - http://iwda.biz) and I want to expand into South East Asia (maybe even live there).

Happy to hear you've got your priorities set right, John! The Camp will now be scheduled for March 3rd (it was agreed after voting among the camp committee members that joined our meeting this Tuesday) and we will put up an announcement as soon as we've confirmed with the venue. You're most welcome to see us some other time :)

A caveat
