Drupal 8 - Core Initiatives Progress Update - 10/13/11 Edition

Update on this format: NEW! Props section. The Initiative leaders were excited to start saying thank you to people who are going the extra mile. We do want to thank everyone who contributes, and not just these people, we'll be singling you out occasionally for an extra big thanks.

Configuration Management

Greg Dunlap (heyrocker)

Status: Green

Headlines

• Fabsor spent some time working on the variable_get()/set() conversion before we ultimately decided it was not going to work, but we got some good learns out of it. For more details see http://drupal.org/node/1288142
• Held a really good IRC meeting, lots of interest and discussions
• Going to have a call with several people about multilingual next week
• Otherwise mostly planning for future sprints and stuff

Next steps

• Two code sprints in the coming weeks and two presentations on initiative status.
• More work on implementations.

Call to Action

• I would still love for someone to take a look at the XML encoding/decoding functionality to see if there are good ideas around how to handle that. See http://drupal.org/node/1288090.
• There is also some discussion around the use of magic-named folders for holding the config that could use a lot more input. See http://drupal.org/node/1299424.
• Get involved in the code sprints!

Web Services

Larry Garfield (Crell)

Status: Green

Headlines

• Some progress made on HTTP context handler
• Some progress on internal refactoring
• Switched away from ArrayAccess as an API model
• Decided to not implement Nothing at this time

Next steps

• Continue work on the HTTP hander and user/session handler
• Going to BAD Camp, can organize something while there if community is interested
• Improve documentation.
• Keep Gabor in the loop.

• Montreal sprint contributors keeping up with it -- thank you!

• Created a master mindmap for the initiative. Should provide a great overview of what is going on. Check it out on http://drupal.org/node/1260534 and zoom to see it better.

• Posted a proposal to break the locale and translation modules into 5 new modules for integration into core, but it didn’t get a lot of comments. Would like this to serve as lego bricks for different multilingual needs. See http://drupal.org/node/1293304#comment-5106322

• Cross-pollinating with the WSCCI and context initiatives on their meetings and issues.

Next steps

• Need to schedule time to discuss with configuration management team
• Identify UX and Data dependencies needed to break the locale and translation modules into different lego pieces and work toward doing that
• Help language with context patch

HTML 5

Headlines

• Talked with several people about Modernizr. The existing contrib project has been getting We plan to discuss in Denver with people involved in both the HTML5 and Mobile initiatives, if core use cases arise, so that we can collaborate with them and others and develop some constructive plans.
• Not enough activity in the issue queue. Very small amount of patches committed over the last month (not much was RTBC). Patches provided during the bi-weekly meeting, but there is much left to review & work on!
• Decided not to bother trying to backport the new HTML5 Form API elements to Drupal 7; Moving forward with implementing new elements in Drupal 8.

Next steps

• Really need help with the issue queue, please contact me so that we can review and find what to put you to work on. Reviewing and testing patches would be very helpful!
• Identify 15 or 20 patches at BAD camp to put on our “must have” list and focus on those for the rest of the year instead of bi-weekly sprints.
• Thinking about doing "Office hours" for the initiative on a weekly basis (probably on the weekend).

• Working on an outline for capturing high-level goals / priorities / deadlines of initiatives / gratitude
• Scheduling the new Drupal co-maintainer and his UTC+9 time zone into the initiatives calls.
• Working with Gábor to add user stories to the D8MI mind map or issue queue.

• Work on formatting for capturing high-level goals of each initiative so we can define “done” acceptance criteria.
