great
I FULLY and I do mean FULLY support any EU Drupalcon organized by the community. My biggest fear is that we will have a "commercial" drupalcon in 2 years in the EU and I really love the community /making/ the the con! so while I might look biased as a potential organiser I will help just as much if needed when it will be in anotehr city the Maastricht and hope this will be returned.
So if Paris wins, I'll be there to help

DrupalCons are professional events
So it will be difficult to let all commercial aspects out of planning.
What we should avoid:
There are a lot of common things to think about and shouldn't be done each year from the scratch.
That doesn't mean, that there is no competition between several locations each year.
Since EU-Cons are needing more and more time for event planning we are needing continous work and infrastructure.
To avoid this we are needing a very strong community plumbed organisation.
That's why I decided to create this group.
In fact we saw the last weeks that we will provoke strong concurrency between Maastricht and Cologne, cause of the very close distance. So we decided to solve this insane situation by renouncing in 2009.

+1 DrupalCon by the community
Bert, I don't know if you know this but I believe that the organization of DrupalCon in Paris is the first time a DrupalCon will not be handled by a company but by an association (though of course some of the DrupalShops are going to invest a lot of effort to make this work).
I trully support the idea of the DrupalCon being community driven and managed. Of course at the same time it is important to get professionals into the loop but I think their perimeter should stay that of logistics.
Coordination between the different groups is vital, and should even be made to a permanent basis.
For an example: All of the events we organize in France are bilingual and we are going to try and help organize events outside of France (Soon a DrupalCamp in Wallonia, French speaking Belgium, later maybe in Switzerland): I think everyone can benefiet from coordinating these types of efforts.
Ori.
no
only one con was organised by a company and that was just because it was faster but all profts went to the DA. all other cons where either by persons or by NfP organised
