Why should you get a free copy of "Learning Drupal 6 Module Development"?

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Yesterday, I received 3 copies of "Learning Drupal 6 Module Development". I requested these from Packt to entice new members (thank you Packt). So, if you have never attended a meeting and would like a free copy post a comment below briefly describing yourself, your Drupal experience (if any), other web development experience and a short plee why you deserve a book. The first 3 people to post a decent plea and attend a meeting will get a free copy at that meeting. If we have more than 3 people who qualify at the meeting, attendees will decide which 3 are the best. Lack of experience with good intentions and a plan seems like a decent plee to me.

So who wants a free book?

Why I should get a book

mechler's picture

Well, I'm a new member and I'm just starting to dip my foot in the pool. My first module is almost complete and I'm going to be moving to northwest Iowa (where I'm originally from) because my wife will be taking a job at a vet clinic in a relatively small town. With little else to do, I'll be sticking with my hobby of 10+ years (hobby programming) and need a good foundation to start from so that I get in the habit of following best-practice Drupal development!

How's that? :)

Holla!

Ahem... ladies and gentlemen, why I would like this book:
< plea>
So I've got this newspaper project, right? Awesome, yes? Lots of opportunities to do really cool social integration and hyper local buzzwordy stuff. Only thing is, I met with my clients and
1. they think the internet and websites are a fad and that eventually people will re-develop a taste for print
2. they don't want to put much effort into creating content
3. they looooove the idea of making social network stuff for the community (facebook-ish stuff, hits w/out putting published material up for free)
SO. This puts me in the position of having to make EVERYTHING as easy, yet innovative as possible. No patchy n00b workarounds for these people. Which means I need to learn how to do this all proper-like.
I can haz book?

Another great book for free - "Using Drupal"

Michael Hofmockel's picture

It is great to see your posts and interest. If you post a comment here attempting to get a free Drupal book, you may also want to post a comment on my other thread offering a free copy of "Using Drupal". It is also the topic of our next meeting.

Working on it!

I'm working on it! I've got a list started that I'll post soon, I hope. Unfortunately, it's mostly just more of the same ones that the first two people posted. D: Still, gotta get my vote in!

Why Give a Book to an Old Fart?

Summitt Dweller's picture

Why would you give a free book to a gray-haired old fart who likes to dabble in PHP and now Drupal? I dunno.

But just in case you're still considering it...

I do Drupal (and web development in general) on-the-side. This is definitely NOT how I make a living so in many respects I'm a lot like Drupal itself... I'm cheap -- but not sacrificing quality!. Nearly all my weekend web work (that is what WWW stands for, right?) is for non-profits and if I break-even on cost of books and software in doing it then I'm very happy. I do it because I want to drag my friends (kicking and screaming) into the 21st century and because my real job is great but lacks creativity. Web building is a one way for me to stay "current" and still be moderately creative.

I guess the other reason... I have 1000's of lines of PHP code that I've written over the past 10 years. In the last month a few of them have found a home in some custom blocks and page bodies that I've written, but I have a lot more that might one day find a new home if only I could get my head around the complexities of building a real module (on the weekend, of course).

That's my story...and I'm sticking to it.

Oh yeah... The other day I bought an eBook copy of "Drupal in Education and e-Learning" from PACKT. It's great. Now if only the weekend was 5 days long...
