Start:
2009-02-21 13:00 - 15:00 America/New_York
Event type:
User group meeting

Join us at MindComet's offices in Altamonte Springs for a 2-hour, 1 topic meetup.

We don't have an "official" topic as of yet, so I was thinking that maybe we could do some Ubercart stuff together. I know a few of us have some experience with it, working together, we could no doubt all learn something.

Ubercart is a set of fully-featured ecommerce modules for Drupal. With it, you can set up an entire online store complete with integration to various payment providers. There is an entire eco-system of modules written for Ubercart that can extend its functionality.

Then again, if someone has a better idea for a topic - post it in the comments.

We should also spend some time doing a "lessons learned" from our first DrupalCamp as well as try to map out some topics for the next few meetups.

If you plan on attending, please login and use the "sign up" functionality below so we have some idea as to how many people to expect. Looking forward to seeing everyone there!

best way to learn

ultimike's picture

Ryan,

Good to hear from you - great work on Ubercart - thanks for your dedication.

There's at least a couple of us who have implemented Ubercart in Drupal sites, but no one who considers themselves an "expert" - what do you think is the best way to learn the system? We're thinking about just building a simple site with various product types (physical/virtual/role-based) then going through some use cases.

Some other stuff I was thinking about looking into:

What are the options for an event-based product (tickets to a show or something like that)?

What are some cool Ubercart addon modules that you think deserve more attention?

Quickbooks integration?

Any direction you can provide would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
-mike

I'd also like to hear some of those. I've got a bid in for a project that will use Ubercart and will need some unusual customizations:
* Fixed shipping costs per item group
* Tiered pricing
* Annual membership fees with optional extra fees.

Hey Mike, I think building a

rszrama's picture

Hey Mike, I think building a simple site is a good way to learn the ropes. It would be best to develop a specific use case ahead of time, the standard one being some sort of a t-shirt store. If you're feeling gutsy, you could broaden it a smidge to be a band website that sells band t-shirts, downloadable music, and fan club memberships in the form of role promotions. I'd love to make that into a book, so I'm not sure it would fit a 2 hr. meet-up. ; )

So, how about a simple store selling physical goods? You can walk through installation, initial configuration, and setting up simple taxes and flat rate shipping. For an example, you can check out the Ubercart chapter in Using Drupal by Lullabot. They sent me a copy, and I was blown away by how good the UC chapter is. You can also find more tips on store configuration in the Ubercart guide produced by Top Notch Themes. They develop themes customized specifically for Ubercart use, a shrewd business move when you look at the sales tally on a theme like Sharp Sales. They also license and distribute copies of the Ubercart chapter from Using Drupal w/ every Ubercart theme they sell!

For event based stores, I highly recommend my UC Node Checkout. The documentation is lacking at the moment, but the gist of it is it allows you to send the customer to fill out a node form when they add a specific product to the cart. The newly created node is associated with that product in their cart, so when they check out, you can do something with the nodes "in their cart." I developed this module initially for use on D5 for Do It With Drupal, but I since have been able to expand it to support attributes on the node forms and include multiple event product support per node type through Views. Basically... it rocks! As soon as I can get this documented w/ some screencasts, I'm sure it'll become one of the most popular Ubercart contrib modules.

Another one that folks may not know about is one I wrote called UC Node Access, which lets you sell access to view nodes on the site. There's also a product feature module I wrote called UC Restrict Qty that, when added to a product, restricts the customer to purchasing just one of that product at a time (useful for events, node access, file downloads, etc.). It actually turns the Qty. textfield on the cart form to a plaintext 1. : )

There are plenty of others deserving more attention, but these should do ya for now.

I replied w/ some more info on QuickBooks integration down below.

Hope that helps!

Ryan,

Great info - much appreciated. I think we'll definitely do a store setup at the meetup as well as maybe a quick overview of the UC Nodecheck and UC Node Access modules. I've read the UC chapter in Using Drupal and it is pretty darn good.

I didn't realize that TopNotchThemes was making themes with full UC integration - that's really handy and good to know. I downloaded their theming guide for UC a couple of weeks ago, but haven't had a chance to check it out yet.

I assume you'll be in DC next month - I'll try to track you down to say thanks in person.

Thanks,
-mike

I heard of a company/service that does this integration at our Drupal Camp dinner. I will dig it up and come prepared for Saturday's meeting.

I've done it through a

rszrama's picture

I've done it through a custom app in the past and was gearing up to implement an Ubercart integration when my wondering eyes beheld the following two modules:

I haven't actually had a chance to test them, but I was encouraged to see development happening. I've also specced out the work necessary for QBOE integration, but I haven't received the go ahead from a client on the work. It requires a bit of investment up front (SSL cert. for dev server, QBOE subscription) that makes it enough of a hassle for me to not do the dev myself. Maybe in the near future, tho!

arrghhh.....

I really wanted to learn more about Ubercart. But, alas, I'm heading to Vegas this weekend with my wife for vacation. Sorry I'm going to miss the meeting. See you guys next month.
