N00b theming problem

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Hi

I've kinda learned how to do site dev with content types, views, etc; and now I'm trying to learn how to make my sites not all look the same.

I tried creating a Zen sub-theme, but I'm like totally frustrated by a problem I'm having with it. I followed the instructions as stated inside the Zen them re how to create a sub-theme. I repeated the process more than a few times, including a second download of the Zen theme, but I can't figure out what's wrong.

In a nutshell, the sub-theme is squishing the node title, main menu, breadcrumb and content together. It's also moving the site name and theme from where it resides in the Zen theme, though I have made no changes to the Zen-based sub-theme.

I created a problem post in the forum at Drupal.org, but no responses. Can someone please tell me, did I post this request in the wrong place? Have I done something incredibly dumb?

Thanks, Jim

Zenophile

I'd recommend creating the starter theme using the Zenophile module. It will automatically follow all the necessary steps to create the subtheme, plus you get some configuration options. I also recommend creating "fresh.css" (a checkbox)--then add all your CSS overrides there.

Thanks, but this is a hosted server

I tried this, but the web server does not have permissions to write to the sites/all/themes directory.

Evidently Zenophile doesn't work well if one does not have root access.

Thanks though!

I've used Zenophile in

I've used Zenophile in regular shared hosting setups and it worked fine. It doesn't need root access. If you're running into permissions problems, check the permissions on that folder via your FTP program and adjust them if necessary. Try 755, and if that doesn't work, try 777.

Thanks - that worked. I was

Thanks - 777 worked. I was able to get Zenophile to create a sub theme, but the end result is the same ... is it conceivable that my Drupal instance has become corrupted somehow, and the problem only shows up in a Zen sub-theme?

Sometimes starting with an existing Zen sub-theme is faster

If you aren't comfortable with the many parts of Zen, sometimes it is faster to start with an existing sub-theme that is close to what you need and use the included custom.css to make overrides to make small changes.

Thanks - how do I figure out

Thanks - how do I figure out which sub-theme is close to what I want? Is there a site that shows them all somewhere?

Some contributed Zen sub themes

I used the list in the theming guide (http://drupal.org/node/340837) which lists some contributed Zen themes. There are also other starter themes (http://drupal.org/node/323993) that might be easier to customize than Zen, especially if you are starting to learn to customize a theme. Perhaps try Basic (http://drupal.org/project/basic) which started as a stripped down Zen, but you can make it your own theme.
