A few years ago I volunteered to migrate the web site of Faith the Dog to Drupal.
It's mostly a personal blog about Faith and her family, her interests, appearances, helping wounded veterans. We also support animal rescue.
My compensation? A few times a month we get a submission on our contact form from someone who has been profoundly affected by the web site and learning about Faith's rescue story. I also get a few dollars in ad revenue, which basically covers the hosting. We recently added ads from the Dogtime network to help support Jude's horse rescue activity.
My other volunteer projects include a web site for my 100 year old synagogue, and some organizations that promote mental health wellness and consumer advocacy.
In case you don't know, the NNJ DUG has a group project to build a Drupal 7 site for a member's bunny rescue organization, if you would like to help and get involved.
