Looking for meetup topics this month

( as with every month :^)

We need two topics, one intermediate and one advanced.
Everyone is welcome to present or to recommend a topic.

There will be time for lightning talks, please propose your lightning talk before hand in the comments below so that we may allocate the time wisely. (Drupal after dark calls at 8:30 =-)

Also there will be a raffle!
Chris Shattuck of http://BuildAModule.com has been kind enough to donate 3 DVD's to the group. We will raffle one off over the next three meetups.

So, will this meet up be in KWALL in Irvine again?
Not sure if this would be an intermediate topic or advanced but can we discuss the uc_hotel module?
Here is the issue I am following:http://drupal.org/node/642462
There seems to be a temporary fix found but if anyone from the group can shed more light on this discussion during our next meetup would be a great help.

Preeti!!

Module still in beta

Siteorganizer,

It looks like the module is still in beta.. We can discuss this of course during our discussion time at the end of the meetup. Looking at the issue it seems that they are adopting a very old way of doing things in Drupal as apposed to using entities. Which will make this module very "Clunky"

I would in this case suggest an alternative route to suite your needs.

Commerce

Id love to see a talk on Commerce. I havent had time to play with it yet but through the little reading I have done it doesnt seem like many are taking on to it. I keep seeing people preferring ubercart due to commerces complexity and steep learning curve. A kind of jump start on commerce talk would be nice.

Good Call

Yeah Kevin from KWALL did a Ubercart/Commerce comparison back in the Fall... I think revisiting a Commerce recipe would go over well.

Ubercart has the "Kitchen Sink" and Commerce has a long way to go in catching up to its feature set.. but in the end.. commerce is what you should build in IMO because of its use of entities. This allows for greater flexibility in the long run.

Not without mention migrating an Ubercart client is going to be tough when moving commerce at some point in the future, so unless the use case really specifies the features in Ubercart.. I would steer clear.

Maybe we should build a Commerce store, import products and build a couple product views.... Your thoughts?

Yeah building a commerce

Yeah building a commerce store I think is a great idea.

Most of my reading on the topic came from this thread http://drupal.org/node/1199602.

Last night I briefly dabbled with commerce using the commerce_kickstart profile. Installation was a breeze. Hopefully Ill get some time to play with it this week.

Considering that Commerce does utilize entities maybe a pre talk on entities might be useful. I just started coming to these meetups last month so not sure if thats something thats been covered already.

In the mean time Ill read up on entities.

Another topic I think might

Another topic I think might be good is taking a prebuilt site and going through the process of making it a distribution.

I recall you showed us the site you did for a DJ or music producer. You mentioned that since you've been doing more and more of these same types of sites you created your own "music producer" type distribution. Not sure if distribution or profile is the correct terminology.

There are a couple ways of

There are a couple ways of doing this. One is with Features (clunky as all hell IMO) and installation profiles. John Romine agreed to show how this is done :)
