User group meeting

The VVC's Web Design & Development Association (VVCWDDA) is an organization devoted towards the advancement of knowledge, skill, and expertise of web technologies in the High Desert community. Our focus is to introduce and discuss practical concepts and techniques in the development of websites, provide a platform to network and share knowledge with other web enthusiasts, impart consultation onto local businesses, and present opportunity for work experience to those interested. We meet on the second and last Wednesday of each month discussing both aspects of web design and web development, respectively. Meetings are generally held in the Student Activity Center, Floor 2 at the Victor Valley College.

This week's session is on...

Only local images are allowed.

Development: Having great tools and knowing how to use them effectively is an important factor towards the success of any project; choosing the best software there is to offer will certainly give you a heads up in the game. Although, when it comes to text editors, everyone's got an opinion. Nonetheless, this week we will explore some of the basic and advanced features you would expect in text editors, some productivity tips with using macros and managing code snippets, useful integrated tools that help with debugging your scripts, adding more functionality with plugins, and tips on how to develop your own custom workspace.

Location

Our meetings start at 6:00PM and are generally held at Victor Valley College in the Student Activity Center, Floor 2. This week our group will meet in the Quiet Room. There is a small $2.00 parking fee for non-student attendees, so make sure you bring extra quarters!
The address is:
Victor Valley College
18422 Bear Valley Road
Victorville CA, 92395

Gabe Treuhaft (an ASB Officer) has generously provided a map of the nearest parking lots along with where you can purchase daily-parking passes.
Lot 8, 20, or 21 are the closest to the Student Activities Center (building 44). If you're in lot 20 or 21 you must take the elevator to get to the upper campus
Only local images are allowed.

Wow, first off, for a web design and developer association your site looks pretty bad. ( wdda.org if that's you )

For someone with a code of ethics listed on their page I find it sad to see your pathetic attempt to bully a local group of people trying to get together and discuss web design.

This is not copyright infringement, you're thinking of trademark infringement. A quick USPTO.gov TESS search shows no trademark registration for "WDDA" or "Web Design & Developers Association". Correct me if I am wrong. Besides, this is the Web Design & Development Association. Close, but not the same.

For copyright infringement we would have had to copy or reproduce text and/or images from copyrighted material like your website. I'm pretty sure no one here was aware of your existence before your post, so that didn't happen.

Here's a handy guide as to what can and can not be copyrighted.
http://www.copyright.gov/help/faq/faq-protect.html

From the above site:
How do I copyright a name, title, slogan or logo?
Copyright does not protect names, titles, slogans, or short phrases. In some cases, these things may be protected as trademarks. Contact the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office, 800-786-9199, for further information. However, copyright protection may be available for logo artwork that contains sufficient authorship. In some circumstances, an artistic logo may also be protected as a trademark.

bullying? you're using our name.

all of your semantics and wonderful legal arguments aside,
according to what you've written, you seem to have no
problem what so ever on infringing on a trademark, service
mark or copyright - as long as you can try to find a quasi-
legal reason to rationalize what you're doing.

the fact is that you stole - intentionally or otherwise, our
name.

i notified you of the fact, and now i expect you to stop
using it.

easy huh?

and frankly speaking - and i don't know why you brought it
up, except as a distraction from the real issue - as were
your comments regarding our web design - i don't care
what you gather and discuss, nor what you call yourselves
in the privacy of your meetings - what i DO care about is
using our name in print - anywhere, any time.

so cease & desist.

WDDA

Solution.

We will simply change the name. Problem solved. Clearly we were unaware about your organization before the name was decided. Our intentions were never to step on any toes or hurt anyone's feelings, I assure you. I'm sorry to hear that you are uncomfortable with a small, college-based organization sharing the same high-profile name as your organization, but I understand that you are simply protecting yourself. We may not be THE "Web Design and Developers Association", but we are certainly an association of web designers and developers; that is simply what we are. Since we are only within the scope of Victor Valley College, we will simply be known as VVC's Web Design and Development Association (VVCWDDA).

This change clearly exhibits that we are not claiming to be who you say you are.

thank you helior. that's an acceptable solution.

Yes, bullying. Instead of

Matthew Krick's picture

Yes, bullying. Instead of introducing yourself and politely asking us to stop you jumped in claiming "clear cut" copyright infringement and ordering cease & desists which you have no legal right to do or understanding of what a copyright is. You acted this way to make people afraid, no one likes the idea that they might be sued and I'm sure you get many people to comply that way. I call that bullying, and it's something I can't stand, so yea, I came in and took some cheap shots at your expense.

As the saying goes, you catch more flies with honey. Ask like a normal human being next time, you might be surprised at the response you get.

No one stole anything from you. It was an accident. We're Web Designers and Web Developers. It seemed like a simple enough name to come up with wouldn't you agree?

Anyway, Helior's a much nicer guy than I am, it looks like we're modifying our name so you don't have to worry about us evil internet name thieves anymore. Have a nice day.

The Victor Valley College

The Victor Valley College WDDA group is a group that was chartered at the local community college. I am sure there was no intention of infringement. I'm not on the board of the Victor Valley College WDDA, but I will pass your message on to those who are.
