Any initial questions/suggestions?
I already mocked up a slide deck, but if anyone (particularly anyone new to this meetup post-DrupalCon) has any initial questions or suggestions about using drupal as a commerce platform, please post here and I'll see if I can include it if/where appropriate.
I'll see everyone in 2 weeks... cheers!
eCommeerce vs. Ubercart and recurring billing
a quick comparison of the Commerce vs. Ubercart modules would be great.
One of the sessions at Drupalcon addressed recurring billing. It was a good session, but basically concluded that custom programming is REQUIRED. Really! Surely there is a template/module that can work out of the box for recurring billing for simple things like a subscription service???
Looking forward to your talk (and less escalators!)
Thanks for the suggestion....
Can you remember which session you're referring to? I know there was one session that was specifically for recurring billing, but it was also touched on in the session for the 'pay' module. And it may have leaked into other commerce related presentations as well.
If you know the exact one (this one? http://denver2012.drupal.org/program/sessions/recurring-billing-hard-har...), I'll take a look at it and make sure to give a response to it.
recurring billing hard hard hard
Yes, that's the one:

Thanks for taking a look and responding to the question.
Uber Paypal
I just use Uber and Paypal for recuring (subscription) charges. Works great and if you have Paypal Pro there is no additional charge. For those of you that will say Paypal is not a real merchant provider, it is my understanding that Authorize has a similar feature.

Uber Authorize.net
Uber and paypal working is encouraging. I'm looking for the Uber Autorize.net secret sauce for recurring billing.
Authorize
I know Uber/Authorize can be done. First step is to set up recurring with authorize.
There are a few gateways like this one http://drupal.org/project/authorizenet
Surely one of them supports recurring ?

I believe i have it working
I believe i have it working in D7 with ubercart and authorize.net. The trick for me was to enable CIM on authorize.net. When i didn't do that, the CIM profile creation failed on the initial order and recurring fees could never be processed because the original full credit info was never stored at authorize.net. ARB (recuring billing) through authorize.net to my knowledge doesn't work in drupal but is instead a manual backend service through authorize.net so i left that alone.
UC recurring

This will connect with authorize.net CIM and get the job done for you! (but you'll still have to configure it properly, of course)
Right, i should have
Right, i should have mentioned i'm using the uc_recurring module as well. Again, as long as you have the CIM service enabled through authorize.net, the rest is the product settings in drupal and seem to be working okay for me now. I'd like to eventually migrate to commerce but i don't know of any working configuration yet for recurring billing. If anyone comes up with something for commerce, please share.
I don't think commerce has one yet...
I've evaluated drupal commerce numerous times (briefly last week as well). The only mention of recurring payments is the commerce recurring framework (http://drupal.org/project/commerce_recurring) but it's way to early in its development cycle to be considered a viable option IMHO.
Here's hoping the big push with the Commerce Guys and their recent funding infusion will provide a solution for this. And a hosted authorize.net CIM module on top of that would be pretty kick ass.
Anyway, I probably won't touch on something so nitty gritty for my talk, but I certainly wouldn't mind having a discussion about this later as it affects me and my clients as well and I'm actively looking into it.
Oh... and recurly
But this too is not really ready for prime time
http://drupal.org/project/recurly
actually, despite the dev
actually, despite the dev status, the basic recurring functionality works well. I have this working on a production site without any issues.
Awesome!
Good to know. I just get really leery of modules that either haven't had a stable release yet or have a very small number of users... particularly if I'm going to bank a clients future on it without the resources to maintain it myself.
My look at commerce says the
My look at commerce says the checkout process is not near ready for prime time.

Huh?
Over 12,000 sites are using Commerce. Nearly all of those include a checkout process.
Flow
Did not mean to offend but we worked to build a site with commerce and could not get the flow of product add and checkout to a point were it was acceptable to us. I will give it another look in the next few months.
I have worked extensively with "Paid" cart sites and have build one Uber site so I do have experience with cart sites and acceptable flow and function.

Meetup?
If you can make it to the meetup, we could go over what you're trying to do. I expect it would be a good learning experience for everyone. Commerce was definitely built for developers first, so it can be complicated to configure, but still possible. Having done a lot of Commerce work myself, I'm looking forward to learning more about Ubercart in D7.
Meetup - Yes
I'm a newbie to Drupal. My good friend Ian Finlay turned me onto it when he was out for DrupalCon Denver. I have an opportunity to create a website for the 2014 FIL Men’s World Lacrosse Championship (Volunteers). This event will be held in Denver July 10-19, 2014. It's a long way off, but the planning will start fairly soon, powered by a lot of volunteers. Thus the need for a website.
Look forward to meeting Front Range Drupalistas!

Peter
